yup something along that line
you should ask for a region-free player supporting XVID & DIVX
many players exists some have features others don't, you should try to get a player with progressive scan, SVCD&VCD capabilities, you might be interested by a DVD player that can do karaoke |

yeah you're right but it doesn't really matter, you can still use your tv with it, most of the DVD player supporting XVID/DIVX will support it too |

Just a question here:
So can a DVD be burned into a sort of VCD which can be read on a normal VCD player? If so, what is the duration capacity of the DVD? i.e. duration capacity of typical CD-R is 80 minutes. I am using Nero Burning Rom. |

A VCD player can only read playable media recorded on CDs. Due to different lasers used, DVDs would be unplayable on VCD players.
If you wish to watch the contents of a DVD on a VCD player, you have to transcode it down, i.e. convert the DVD MPEG-2/4 format down into MPEG-1, and burn it on a VCD.
Naturally this will decrease the quality of the show. Also a DVD can fit up to 2 hours at its standard quality. So two or more VCDs might be needed for a DVD content. |

depends on which VCD format you use, some VCD formats like KVCD can give you up to 360 mins on one CD (dunno if its VCD or SVCD format) but the resolution will be very low & the quality of the video will suffer (for example, with a VCD using KVCD, you'll get 90mins of video in near or equivalent to DIVX quality (704x480 resolution))
The KVCD (KDVD) format can also be applied to DVD, extending their capacities to ~6hours of vid for 720x480 resolutions & ~10hours of vid for 352x480 resolutions (KDVD is DVD compliant)
(for more info www.kvcd.net) |

I was thinking of getting this:
TDK AID+1616DLN Dual Format DVD Writer
As far as what I know, it is the best DVD writer out there now, though LG uses an extra DVD-RAM technology. |

Any of the discs can be multi-session.
Only the RWs can be rewritten. |

I prefer using DVD-R, most of the stand-alone players are compatible with it
I never tried DVD+R up to now _________________
