Yup.. The storyline is based exactly according to the old Hanyakyo Maids.
Its practically a remake of it. However there are a few changes, like the Protoganis, Is now older(Last time he looked too young) , and I think they've added a few more characters.
Its not too bad, but not as funny as the first series. Oh yeah, it's ecchi as well, like before. |

I've watched the first 2 eps This one looks alot better and it has a story line to it unlike the first one witch was just random excuses for showing girls naked. This version has less nudity, and it is put out by a diff group. The first season was MOE I think. Anyway not as funny as the first season but much better in evey sense of the word.

| Remake? I thought it was a continuation of the story. It didn't have any sort of ending damn it. When I watched the last episode I was like "huh? 15 eps.? wtf? where's the ending?" Why don't they do something right and do a few eps. that end the story. And I thought "La Verite" was the 2nd season. |

Both series of Hanaukyo Maids (the original and La Verite) are drawn from the manga. There are some parts which are handled by both, some handled by one or the other, and some totally re-interpreted (for instance, Ryuka's first appearance is depicted in the MOE series as it happened in the Manga, the "10 Contests" of Episode 2 of HMLV was never in the manga).
What I found interesting is that in the manga, the episode covering the underground dungeon (including the dog Fenrir, the picture of the black-haired Mariel, and the scene with Taro falling on top of Mariel and Mariel looking totally glassy-eyed and being in a completely different place) actually took place after the events in Episodes 10 and 11.
Since to my knowledge only the first three volumes of the manga have been released in English, I can't say whether the mystery surrounding the picture of the black-haired Mariel has been resolved yet, but I've got my own theories on what it all means.
And a note on the change of the level of story and ecchi-ness: Looking at the end of the OP, you notice that the words "GENEON USA" are listed. It's almost certain that the series was commissioned by Geneon USA with the intent to release it to the US market (with Volume 1 due out on DVD in January 05). Thus they toned down the ecchiness compared to the original series, and focused more on the story-side of the manga, but kept enough fan service in there to appeal to the maid fanservice fans. |

Unfortunately, the end of LV was rushed because of there not being any guarantee of there being a second season - hence Taro and Mariel walk off into the sunset when there are still a lot of questions unanswered, mostly in relation to Taro's mad/misguided/manipulative grandfather. It's interesting, because in the original anime, he's just a dirty old man who decided to leave his grandson all his possessions and retire to an island. In LV, it's implied he's just as much a dirty old man (case in point: the "flusher" on the toilet) but the LV version of Hokusai is much more like the manga.
Like I said, I really want Ironcat to release the next three volumes of the manga so I can see if my thoughts regarding the "black-haired Mariel" are accurate. It's something that Konoe says in the manga version of Blue Silent Bell that she doesn't say in the anime that leads me to these thoughts. |
