Xenosaga the Animation Reviews and Synopsis on Anime-Source

Finished watching episode 1.

It's got a very high sci-fi feel to it which I like (taughts of Space Odyssey, Star Trek and Babylon 5 kept popping into my mind). The characters introduced for both human and android are interesting, each unique with it's own prespective.

The action (mech and alien) sequence are good.

Did not like the opening credits but I definitely want to get the closing theme.

I am looking forward to the next episode both for it's visuals and story.

It should be on any of the anime torrent sites.

It looks pretty good so far. Looking forward to see where they take this.

I have heard that this anime is based on the game itself and from what I have heard from the way others are talking, they keep talking about the game.

So is this animation really sticking to the game closely? How close and would it be really interesting or understandable to one who has yet to play the game?

Speaking from the point of view of someone who has not played the game, i would say that's a difficult question to answer as they haven't started the story proper yet in the anime. All they did in ep 1 was introduce the characters. There is a little bit of terminology / concepts used that left me with question marks but not enough for it to impact my enjoyment of the show.

You don't have to play the game to enjoy watching the series.

I liked the first episode, just didnt particularly like the character design...dunno what about it...jsut x.x but those aliens are so damn cheap, they can fire without phasing into real space and why do they care so much about the 100 series realian? does it have some speical power?

Well, I just watched the first episode and from a point of view of one who has never played the game,

This show has ugly mecha ( and Gnosi ) designs. The blockiness and lack of details on the mechs really made me go "ewwwl". What was nice was the display of the agility of the "mini mech". The ugly designs however somewhat extended to some of the other graphical areas as well, namely the interfacing of the 2D and the 3D graphics. It was way too obvious which was 3D and which was 2D and when they tried to make them mesh, it comes off weird ( like the shadows of the guy touching Zohar and the subsequent moments. Also the Gnosi ships of which some are 2D and some 3D ).

The story is however interesting so far. The unrevealed background histories of the characters ( especially since one of the high officers is revealed to be a traitor so early on ) attracts. I like the developments so far in episode 1 and I would say this episode is worth watching to test if you would like to go on with this series.

Boy, I was surprised when KOS-MOS turned into that female android. I thought it was just a super weapon that would help a bit then turned out to be futile and be destroyed ( only to be replaced by that female later on in the series ). That was cool Smile

For anyone who hasn't played the game, they took pretty much all design directly from the video game. It literally looks like they sat down, looked at the game, and drew exactly what they saw. I understand that on the one hand they wanted to look very close to the video game, but its significantly harder to show complex detail in rendered graphics than in drawing it so their designs are much more simple than you would see in an anime designed from scratch.
