As most of you might have noticed I recently wrote my first anime DVD review. I realize that I’m nowhere near a perfect writer so some feedback and suggestion on the review would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know which areas I should improve on, change completely or include. I might not take all of your advice but I will defiantly give everything you guys say serious thought. The only way I can get better at this is with your help.
well, first of all, i never watched this anime either, so its hard to say whats wrong with ur review
second of all, i really have no knowledge about reviews or wutever, so everything that shall be adressed in teh following statement will really have no validity... but i guess it can help
i WOULD suggest that u should speak more about hte plot and characters, but from what you say, there really wasn't much of a plot or a cast of characters to begin with anyways. -.-
but if there WAS a plot and cast of characters to talk about, i would say that you should talk a little more about them. was the plot ongoing and fast moving? was it slow? did they make you go through tremendously painful amounts of flashbacks? were there any disliked characters that annoyed you? what made certain characters likable or unique?
and most importantly of course, you have to explain WHY you liked or disliked this anime. Generally, you should be very specefic when addressing this.
but i think you did a pretty good job in doing that XP so there really isn't much to fix in that area
NEWAYZ, since this is only the 1st episode, the topics taht can be covered in ur review were probably very limited, so you probably wouldn't have been able to do half of what i just adressed anyways. _________________ GG
I'm not what you'd call a professional writer so...
If you're still reading, I guess what you're looking for is general opinion. That much I can provide.
While I'm not a writer by profession, I have written articles and reviews for several publications in the past. What I learnt during that period in my life, is that although rules for writing do exist, there's absolutely no need to follow them to the letter.
The writer's job is to convey his feelings about the subject to his audience. Technically, your review is sound. It's also extremely informative. However, I feel that it's lacking one important ingredient. Personality. I may be biased, but I believe that entertainment value should be a consideration. When was the last time you asked to be educated?
Ok after reading Rynn's post I decided to clarify what I’m requesting a bit more. What would make the article a more interesting read for you guys? What can I do to make it more entertaining and actually something people might look forward to seeing?
I like the "make it more personal" suggestion. I’ll try to use a more personal style of writing in my next review.

I'm expecting that the answers you'll get in response to those questions would be extremely varied... Different people look for different things. I'm sure that there's even a population out there who don't bother with the text in a review and evaluate it based on total score. I would suggest starting with what you like. Read any articles/reviews that impressed or entertained you?
Personally, I enjoy reading the reviews done by 1638, Himitsu, Yebyosh, and macerboy. There are others but I can't remember their usernames... Can't really find a constant but I'm guessing that it's got something to do with being opinionated, informal, and perhaps honest. That's what matters to me I guess. In fact, I decided to contribute (a little...) only after reading some of their stuff.
