CG can be great for complimenting animation, it really depends on how its used. Sometimes the CG scenes just stick out really badly and look awful, but if done right it can make the animation look very nice.
Air is a good recent example of this. FLCL is also an awesome example, you can't even tell in FLCL.
Currently I think CG looks cheap and tries too hard to be realistic when it has that 'fake' look to it. The new Star Wars movies are a good example of too much CG. |

CG is used to improve the art normally CG art in several animes look kinda weird.
Except in FLCL,Air and maybe Full Metal Panic (they messed up a few times)
100% hand draw tends to lean towards the disaster that Condor Hero went through. I.E laf why is she squatting and he's spinning around a tree technique! |

| there's good examples of the successful meshing of traditional cel/digital artwork and newer CGI works. i mention cel and digital together because we all know that Love Hina was digitally animated, but doesn't have the look of CGI that we're most familiar with. vandread is a good example of a hybrid series that did a good job with CGI for the most part. if it didn't need to be CGI, they didn't make it CGI, which is always a good thing. of course, GitS:SAC and cowboy bebop also deserve mention for accomplishing the task. one series that i felt did NOT use CGI effectively was Initial D. bakuretsu tenshi was also another one of those Gonzo works that used CGI when none was needed. i never thought the CGI for FMP! was that bad, but it's true it could have been better. |

Wow thanks for all the info.
Another thing I came across was that CG can also be used in manga. Gantz is the example I've scene for this. They use CG to lay the ground work for the characters and backgrounds and then replace them with handrawn images for the characters and just draw a thick black line on the background. |

CG is good as long as it integrates perfectly together with the hand-drawn ones. Some of the best ones that I have seen combining tose 2 components and comes out good are:
Ah! My Goddess TV
Emma
Ghost in the Shell Series
Appleseed

i actually hate when a anime relies on cg but its not something that completly ruins a show for me i just wish the cg would be tuned down a little look at gantz i think the show would be better if they were to take some of the cg out _________________ And the lord said onto him what is thy name and he answered saying my name is legion for i am the one of the many |

i only approve of CG if it doesn't take away the actual significance of the original animation(drawing) or character design. really, i'm not a big fan of CG. i really disliked how they used CG in DNAngel....made everything look like that barbie movie or watever that thing was. looks too kidish. _________________

You all do know that nearly all new anime is made in computers now? I think you all are referring to 3D animations. To me, I think it's alright as long as it looks good. Like how they use 3D graphics for nearly anything machine related in FMP. Funny thing is, sometimes you'll be looking at 3D animations and wouldn't even realize it. _________________

The use of CG is in my opininon, should only be just an anime enhancer. However there are times they are needed badly to help the anime like Initial D.
Anyway, such technology can no longer be ignored in the animation production. |

Well, I dont like the CG graphics too much. Usually they feel "out of place".
For me a good CG is when the viewer cant tell that is watching a CG.
Bad examples of use of CG:
- Geneshaft
- Candidate for Godess (Really ugly!)
- Initial D
- Blue Sub (Not so bad, but too much!) _________________
