The 1980s series is licenced here in Australia, check out Madman.com.au for details on AstroBoy. They have the rights to both the 1980s version and the 2004 version and, aside from being in the process of releasing each on single volumes, they have released a collector's tin with the complete series (51 eps) plus a bonus disc which features amongst other things, two subtitled 1980 Astroboy episode and one subtitled B&W episode of the original Tetsuwan Atom series from the 1960s.
Until checking Amazon five seconds ago, I thought that there were no Region 1 releases for either the new series or the old. Then I saw that they have a five-disc set containing "the complete series" being release March 29, but seeing as how they're using the 2004 title logo and it's only five discs I think it's the 2004 series. I don't see how they'd fit 10 episodes on a single disc. The Australian complete collection is on ten discs plus the extras disc. I saw it in my DVD store yesterday and if not for being nearly broke I'd have bought it ;_;

I was reading about this show cause i guess it played a big role in the popularization of anime. It was before my time but i still know a bit about it and i was actually really surprised to see it as a newly listed anime in the reviews section. One would assume such a momentous anime would have had a page for itself ages ago? who'da thought _________________ "Let them hate, so long as they fear" |

Just wondering why the chinese translation for Astroboy is Atomboy...
I can still find Astroboy in video tapes stores, just that the quality is low. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

That is because the original name for the series is "Tetsuwan Atom" -> Iron Arm Atom -> Mighty Atom.
Astroboy is actually named "Atom" in Japanese. Hence the Chinese translation is actually more correct and true to the source than the English version.
The English version's names were created at the time when Western anime adaptations was still in its infancy. Their methods then were to change every name into a Western form, most of the time with no correlation to the Japanese name. Somehow the names stuck and the future incarnations of Atom became Astroboy for the West.
The East is still using Atom as we speak. Currently, there is another work that is set in Tezuka's created world, and it features Atom as a main supporting character.

I still remember this great series back in the 90's, since it was still being shown back then. It was english dubbed but who cares?
I usually compare Astroboy to Rockamn since they're almost the same except that he can fly and Rockman can't. he's also one of the reasons that I learned to draw.
About that "new" astroboy....I haven't seen it yet. so I can't give a comment about it at the moment. _________________

I grew up knowing it as Atom, so I was kinda confused when I heard of name Astroy boy in Canada.
It's one of the most memorable TV series I watched as little kid, along with Jungle Emperor Leo, Gachaman, Tetsujin28, and one other series I can't remember the name of. Actually I liked the Smurfs alot too. hehehe
That one that I can't remember the name has been bothering me alot recently... I want to know what the series is called, but it's so old and I don't remember any of the character's names. But, I remember the plot and characters very clearly. I remember so clearly that I could almost draw the characters in my head. My search goes on... _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |
