|
|
I don't know if anybody else feels embarressed for them but whenever I watch the credits for a fansub I always draw a little comfort from the fact that I'll probably never meet these people in real life and therefore never humiliate them in front of their friends for calling themselves things like....
Deathwolf
I vote we make this the official, "let's discover the most retarded handle for an anime fansubber" list, present company accepted, of course. |

I guess it is pretty much that Internet presence deters people from putting up their own real names to claim credit. If they get any fame, their Internet associated personality allows them to feel good. If they gets sticks & stones, it allows them to ignore it in real life. Sort of like a filter... of course these days, people are getting too meshed up in their Internet alias.
Like the proverb "What is meat for the goose is poison for the gander", so it is "What is cool for one is totally stupid to another"
But I do have one gripe with fansub group names. Calling oneself "Sonchou" smacks of egotism to the highest degree. Sonchou is an honorific term awarded by people to those who they feel are superior or worthy of respect. No one in their right mind in the Asian societies here would call themselves "Sonchou" or its equivalent. If they want to use it in its Japanese "noun" form, it still smacks of ego as well. |

You have a point here. I guess it was a moment of weakness
Actually the reason I brought this up is two-fold. As you know I was watching haibane the other day and, as I watched the opening sequence for one of the eps, it occured to me that the credits were a waste of time. Firstly, the credits that are actually interesting (to me) are who directed the show; who did the acting; who provided the music; this sort of thing. In other words, the series' credits, not the fansubbers. These, however, weren't translated so I don't know who to thank or who to look out for in future releases (although, in fairness, at least one of the groups provided a credit list at the end of the final episode).
On the other hand, one tends to favour certain groups over individuals so knowing who's in each group is less important, especially when they give meaningless names. It's more or less the same as calling oneself anon. It's OK for a message board but outside of a small community a nick is relatively useless. How many different Kaisers are there across the internet? Probably quite a few. If the nicks are registered on rizon then I suppose this has a little more point to it, although I can't ever imagine pming one of these guys, especially if he's called B4D@$$n1gg@h. Although I always find it quite amusing when you see guys with those sorts of names translating shows like "Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar."
Of course I'm not saying that fansubbers shouldn't credit themselves; they worked hard as well. But let's get our priorities straight here. Their primary task is to translate the anime. For me this includes letting the fans apreciate the hard work of the people who made the anime in the first place. So the makers' credits first please, then yours. |

While I can see how some of the names are reaching, I like to think that some of the others may have some history behind them. Just like my handle here. (No I don't care to bore you with that one... I'm sure you can come up with plenty of ~wonderful~ things yourselves that are probably more amusing.) :P
As for the "Wanting to know the production and cast" that actually seems to be something that is being solved as of late. Groups translating the whole OP credits along with the show, or putting staff and cast things in like an omake section. That is all dependant on the group though I think.
So while yeah, some of the names are flat out silly I guess it is far from being one of my grave concerns w/ the fansub itself. ^^; |

That's not true at all. Some people have rather Unique names that no one else uses. Surprisingly enough, AngelKing is one of them. If by some chance, AngelKing is taken somewhere, then I use xXAngelKingXx.
Heres my SN story
I thought up of the screen name AngelKing back when I was playing StarCraft. I've played that game for quite a while and met a lot of different people while doing so. A few years ago, I discovered Counter Strike and started playing that. You wouldn't believe how many times people would see my name in a public server and recognize me from our SC days.
Online, your SN has the same amount of meaning as your face + real name do in real life. There must be hundreds of people who see your face every day, but few remember it. (BTW, this only holds true if your screen name is somewhat original, if its something common, you're out of luck ^^) |

Eh... I see no relevance to really taking pride with a screenname...
Yes, we pick 'em so we can tell each other apart and to identify with who we are conversing, but other than that they have no real meaning...
Over the years, I've been (for various different communities/games and in no particular order):
Jazzmann16 (first screenname I ever used, back in high school)
NinjaDeathSloth
Salzorin
Keitarou
Keitarou-Booyaka
Drakin
White Spy
Black Spy
Minigunn
Man_Called_Horse
Man_Called_Elephant
Man_Called_Orca
--(My jesus kick)--
Fat_Jesus
Thin_Jesus
Ripped_Like_Jesus
NinjaDeathJesus
The_Jesus
How do you guys know me? Keitarou... or Sam for those that have actually spoken with me long enough to know...
How do the people of Cities of Heroes know me? White Spy, along with my crime fighting partner Black Spy... making up the Spy vs. Spy team Cloak and Dagger
How did the people of Everquest know me? Salzorin
How did the people of Starcraft know me? NinjaDeathSloth
How did the people of Counterstrike know me?.... by like 10 different names...
My point is... names are really a relative and insignificant symbol. As long as I can equate Kaiser with the Canadian he is, AngelKing with the jackass he is, and SCR with the hick he is... mission accomplished. _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |

I can't say an SN is stupid or not because it's meaning is known only to the person who made it. The rest of us will be like ... wtf is the deal with the zox?
(Short story- i started with ArkAngel with AOL 4.0... ugh... then adopted that same name to SC , people started abreviating it to Ark so i changed my name to xxArkxx, then my sn needed to be changed, added the zox so it would let me use it(All others were taken)... AND FINALLY i started using this for everything cuz it's easiest for me to remember) Wish i had just used Ark though .. _________________ [IMG:508:164:6c8e3c695e]http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p252/inqArk/Original_sig.jpg[/img:6c8e3c695e] |
