Well, as a person who studies both militaristic styles and karate AND judo/jiu jitsu, I can say this was relatively interesting. A little less personal comments and notes on how systems SUCCEED AND FAIL in specific may help a bit for people who are looking into another style but are already in them. The general ideas are nice though, and the comments on teacher/school/business/history effectivness is very welcome. It certainly was informative in those departments, and the Aikido descriptions (though I personally am looking into it myself already) are very well thought out.

P.S.- you do a good job but are much too derogatory on styles such as general karate and tae kwon do. Not to say they aren't or argue, but if this to be an editorial, use a little less harsh language so people can follow you without thinking "this guy is biased and mean." (I personally don't think you are, so thats to think about)

Of note: I have been in martial arts tournaments, and with only karate blocks, low kicks and ONE judo takedown per opponent (MAYBE some connective jabs to expose weaknesses) I have been very successful against most styles. And yes, I can handle myself on the street and have done so multiple times. Again, I think there areflaws in the styles, and I won't argue, but ifyou put it in a more moderate light it'll be easier to see what you are trying to say AND not offend people (should they be people easily offended, I am not).

My karate.. place mixes a whole bunch of techniques together :0
There's traditional karate (forms/sparring/whatnot), tae kwon do, kickboxing, weapons (not the swords, either. XD knives and sticks are what I'm talking about), and bits of philipino(sp?)/chinese/korean martial arts mixed in.
Also a pretty small place, with.. 4 masters? And some instructors. Very dedicated, as far as I can tell.

..that's good, right? o.o

Interesting article, though. =D I learned a lot about different martials arts from reading it XD

Capoeria?
$10US gets you two weeks of Capoweria classes here in Colorado. Started attending a Kendo club at school, and the president also teaches a little Aikido.

Shinai to the head hurts, but you get over it.

well, i have some opinion here, i wondering why is jeet kun do is not included in the list as well?

generally Jeet Kun Do is created by the legendary late Bruce Lee, who combine kungfu style and some western as well as asian martial art style........i have seen the move and it good.

but there is one problem, not really easy to learn this skill Wink

There are debates whether Jeet Kune Do is a martial arts or not. Some people believe that Jeet Kune Do is a way of life or a way of learning/teaching. I've heard many people say its more a philosophy.

Trying to find a site that I went on long time ago but I can't find it so I'll post a link later maybe.

jeet kun do is an martial art, i even seen the book on the skill punches that my cousin bought at a major book store Rolling Eyes

why the debate since this skill was undoubtedly used by the late Bruce Lee, in all his film? Confused

You have to into account every martial arts require time to acquire certain level of domain. The same happens to jeet kun do, you're not going to kick as bruce lee just reading the book!.

nope reading a book is not the way to go...
shall i intoduce myself? i'm kiwi Very Happy
probably remember me from a long time ago, well i'm back
where shall i start? my views on marsall arts?
i have done four years karate, and i've learnt a few techniques from other marshall arts..
karate is good to learn, as it is more force. tae-kwon-do, uses more sophisticated techniques, but not nessacerly better. tae-chi is useless, do not attempt. if you really want to get good at your marshall art, i recomend learning a few judo moves as well, or even wrestling, it may appear fake, but wresting moves are the best for getting someone down. and punches are best learnt from boxing

also using any sport can help you fight better, rugby for charging people, football for sliding, badmitton or tennis to get the speed in which you hand moves to the absolute maximum.

but do not try to learn from reading from a dammed book, you won't get anywhere, even watching someone doing it on a screen is better than that.

and i've written far too much, no-one is gonna read it now...

good luck with your marshall arts ppl

just sticking to one marshall art is probably a bad idea.
