if my memory serves me correctley (eh?), the rest of the band (dave Grohl and Chris Noveselic) wanted to release something like this ages ago, but there was a big argument with Kurt's wife, Courtney, about the rights or something. i heard that was the cause for the postponement.
taking that into consideration, i don't really think it's just shameless money making. they just wanted to share everything with the fans, but it just didn't go as they wanted it to.

you are correct, for some reason courtney believed that she was the inspiration for all of the kurts songs so she wanted to get credit for them, though they finally settled it

I've heard that also but I've also heard Courtney got the money for this and not the band members.

yeah, i never did here how it ended. apparently, they tried to claim courtney was insane and tried to had her commited (rumor?) anyway, a friend of mine has the boxset, and i for one quite like it. lots of songs i've never heard before.
