My #1 vote has to go to the Soul Calibur series since they were the games to get me back into the fighting game arena. And in my opinion no game has yet to dethrone it from the King of Fighters titles. (pun intended) If only Soul Calibur 3 wasn't Ps2 only =(.

My second choice would probably go with GGXX #Reload. Fast crazy gameplay, intregral decisions like ":burst for tension or defense" or use tension on a roman cancel or wait for a super opportunity?" make the game insanely fun. And reload is the best because of the character balancing XX needed.

Third choice is a tie between VF4:Evo and KoF (98/2000/2002). Both of these games are insanely technical and require quite alot of practice to just keep you on a decent level. Also both games give you so many opportunities to escape, so no lame Street Fighter cheesing. And none of the lame jab-juggles found in Tekken.

And why do people insist on SSB:M being rated in the greatest fighting games? Its a great game and i Play it often, but the nature of the game is based on chance. It cannot stand up as a tournament fighter and still be considered one of the greatest. Playing on Final Destination with no items is about as archaic gameplay as Street Fighter 2.

Supur Smash Borthers is fun but Street Fighter is one of the first so I got to go with that ^.^

I have to go with Soul Calibur. I really like that game a lot...for a fighting game. I really don't play them all that offen.

my favorite fighting games are guilty gear and DOA. i like guilty gear because of the awesome music plus the insane combos u can pull in that game. also the one hit kills are a plus and a good way to taunt ur best friend. guilty gear also has a really good storyline and character design. i like DOA for the erm.....fighting? lol but in all seriousness DOA was a good fighting game because i like the fact u can counter almost anything the other player does to u. another thing about this game is that a complete noob can pick up this game and beat it but it takes a long time to master countering.

my favourite fighting game of all time has to be Virtua Fighter 4!!!! Its a beautiful game w/ great graphics, and realistic fighting styles. I reccomend everybody to at least play it once in their life!
