u can plug without any problem an usb 2.0 device on usb 1.0 or 1.1ports
for firewire, its like the rival of the usb ports (way better than usb 1.1, almost as good as usb 2.0)

Ok, you bought an MP3 player with USB 2.0 ability. This means, the 2.0 is capable of transfering data several times faster than the standard USB 1.1. However, you currently have USB 1.1 ports.
Meaning, the MP3 player will only be able to transfer data at 1.1 speeds. You can use the MP3 player but you wont be able to use its full potential.

I've usually heard that FireWire is superior. Yes, USB 2 has a slightly higher rated speed, but in the real world, FireWire outperforms USB.

It is true that FireWire slightly outperform USB 2.0. Go google it to find out more.

FireWire also has an 800mbps variant but i think only Apple computer have it... i haven't really seen many PCs with FireWire800
(USB 2.0 is like 480mbps and FireWire is 400mbps)

like everone else is saying... firewire is quite a bit superior to USB2 even though it has less bandwidth.
