well, i have a 120gig external hard-drive, this is where i keep all of my anime.
i recently found out that, all of the anime on it has been corrupted or in some other way has turned unreadable.
there are two possibilities, one it got whacked when i was bringing it home from my dorm. or two my mom hung my headphones on it, (the magnets in the speakers)
i don't know if a normal set of headphones has strong enough magnets to do this, but its the only thing i can think of, cuz i know i ran alot of the files when i first got home, and there weren't any problems
any way, the big question was if anyone thought it was possible for the magnets in the headphones to mess the with hd.
and the other question is, any one know of a way to fix the files?
i have already run r-studio, and it didn't even say tehre was anything wrong with the files, i am currently running a windows xp error check on the drive to see if that will fix anything, and will probably defrag to see if all the data has just been to garbled
well thanks all |

I don't know about the second one, but by right speakers shouldn't have that much magnetic strength. But there is a high possibility of bad sectors when your hdd got whacked. Try using recovery programs like Norton Ghost/GoBack. That's my point of view, coz I don't know about how others think about this. |

no way will headphones or speakers have powerful enough magnets to mess up a hard drive.
as mentioned above, try Norton recovery stuff but you might also just try doing this:
Start > Run > type "cmd"
type "chkdsk /F D:" (where D: is the letter for your external drive)
if that doesn't fix it then try norton ghost stuff. |

How old was the external hard drive? The typical life span for hard drives is 4+ years. Does it make any noises when u power up the HD?
Just a side note, head speakers aren't powerful enough to disrupt the discs inside unless it was placed there for a very long duration. |

computer speakers or headphones can't damage hard drives. Computer speakers are shielded, while headphones won't have enough power to do anything even if they aren't shielded.
As all the people said, do all the check disk or whatever commands. Hard disks don't die so easily.
If nothing works, try plugging it to another computer, or if its just a hard drive with a case, then pull the hard drive and stick it inside the computer and see if it will work at all. |

Most hard disks are damaged because of head crash (the pointer hits the surface of the disk). I had 2 Maxtor and 1 Seagate hard disks thrown into recycle bin because of this.
If you don't have any important data stored inside, try format it. Sometimes, it may work again. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

I tried running scan disk, showed that nothign at all was wrong with the files.
The 3 files that work, work 100%,
All the other files, have blank thumbnails, will act like they are going to play in a media player, and then just remain blank
r-studio said that absolutely nothing was wrong with any of the files on the drive.
It didn't make any weird sounds.
Its a LaCie 120 gig, thats about 8 months old.
I don't have another computer to try any of the files on (it only has firewire capabilities)
I realize it will probably work after a reformat, but i want to have that be an extreme last resort.
thanks for giving me some advice all |

alright, i don't know if this is the same, but i'll share it anyways.
a few months ago, my brothers anime was corrupted, in a much simalar fashion. not all files, but most, wouldn't play correctly. after re-installing codecs, janking the same file of my computer etc. it still didn't work. then, i noticed that the file that was corrupted on his computer, worked perfectly on mine. so i went back to a windows system restore point from a few days earlier, and all was well. apparently, there was something on his computer that fugged up the codecs or something. anyhoos, you can try and see if that works with your files as well. |

what brand of codecs did you use? I once had the experience of codecs messing up my file system, so I boycotted codecs and switched to VLC Player. |
