Has anyone seen it?
My neighbour Totoro I mean.
It's a old anime movie from the year I was bourne, (1988) and is probably the best anime movie i've ever seen It's created by the same team as Princess mononoke and Spirited away.
Anyway If you've seen it, please post your oppinions |

The mangaka, Miyazaki is considered one of Japan's treasure. I have collected most of his works and most of them are full of imagination which is not only suitable for kids and for adults. I like the Grave of Fireflies best as it shows Japans most difficult time which is around 1940 when there is world war. The story is sad and touching so if you like Totoro then you should see this one. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

He's more of a director than a manga author. In fact his only major manga is Nausicaa and he took decades to complete it.

And that happens to be a movie that he has nothing to do with. It's a project of his long time collaborator at Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata (also the director of Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas, and my favorite work of his, Only Yesterday).
Anyway, I think that My Neighbor Totoro is definitely a very interesting and experimental kids movie. It's far from perfect but with its creation Miyazaki proved that a simple concept of magic and discovery can be hugely entertaining and not just for kids. He never made anything quite like it again but recycled some ideas in Spirited Away, for example.
Actually the work of Miyazaki has been continuously degrading over the last 20-25 years. He's never made a bad movie, but he hasn't been able to reach the same level as his work from the 70s (the TV show Future Boy Conan and Lupin III Castle of Cagliostrol) either. Most of his projects from the 80s simply reused ideas from FBC (in fact Castle of Cagliostro was a straight ripoff) and he went a bit overboard with blatant enviromentalistic messages. Since Kiki's Delivery Service he's kept taking longer breaks (in fact his only big project before Princess Mononoke was the wonderful Porco Rosso) and it's becoming more and more apparent that he continues making movies simply because he can't stop (he's announced at least 3 times that he would retire). I don't think we can blame him for staying active even at his age, but we shouldn't expect much more from him either. For a long time he has been incapable of coming up with anything innovative and he probably never will be again. _________________ Is that the best you can do, you pansies? |

Oh, i thought Studio Ghibili was Miyazaki's studio?
It's hard to come up with something everyone likes since kids today may prefer action oriented or romance kind of anime while his work is mostly on imaginative ones like Spirited Away. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

Miyazaki belongs to Ghibli, not the other way around. Actually they've had quite a few directors other than Miyazaki and Takahata work on smaller projects in the last 10 years.

In fact Spirited Away is quite action oriented, in a way similar to Kiki's Delivery service (after all Spirited Away can be summed up as 'Kiki meets Totoro'). Miyazaki's newest film, Howl, is also getting bashed quite a bit for recycling old ideas btw.
Moreover my point about Totoro wasn't that concerned with the presence or absence of action. What makes it unique is that the plot is entirely secondary, unlike every other Miyazaki movie. Kids go to a new place, magic happens, and that's it.
I don't believe in the idea that the stuff kids "today" want to watch has somehow become inherently different. In fact old kids shows and movies are enormously popular. My Neighbor Totoro itself still is one of the best selling Studio Ghibli works (17 years after its making).
Moreover you have to specify what ages of kids you're talking about. Totoro is targeted for kids up to say 10 years old (crap like Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon does sell well to them but that doesn't mean it should be the only thing they ever watch). Action shows like DBZ (including the throng of copycats - Naruto, YYH, Hunter X Hunter, etc.) are targeted to kids 12-15 years old. Romance is mostly targeted to mid/high schoolers and up. _________________ Is that the best you can do, you pansies? |

Totoro's definitely one of the best Miyazaki movies. I seriously hope that Disney will have it in the next Ghibli wave. I'd torture small kittens in front of a group of kindergarteners to get a DVD release of Totoro. _________________ Zannen, Canada - Your Canadian anime source. |

Is miyazaki dead? I was watching the Japanese Friday Roadshow, and they aired "the flying castle Laputa", so i was wondering if he was still alive since he made the new movie "The moving castle" or sumthing like that.
Oh, and i love his movies, theyre SOOOO good. Seriously, even if you dont understand japanese you should watch it. Some of them are a little gruesome tho so be careful. _________________

I'd say just a bit stupid. The answer to his question is in his own post.
Though he could also find it in the posts above he didn't read. _________________ Is that the best you can do, you pansies? |

I'm sure he's just joking (although it's a lousy joke).
Miyazaki has contributed a lot to japanese animation industry. It would be sad to see him retire, although Studio Ghibili will carry on producing high quality works. _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

Oh, sorry i didnt really have time to read the above posts... Im kinda getting lazy in my old age. Many authors, and movie producers dont release a movie/story right after it is published and all. Since all the previous works of miyazaki are all released to the public in the 1980s, I didnt know whether he was still making movies or not. His works are great, but the animation will always be the same since Studio jibli has rights to the work and animation. _________________
