The Sekai no Senki trilogy (Crest/Banner of the Stars 1 + 2)
Its pretty deep, and gets to you after a while.

I have to agree on EVA and Rahxephone.

I has to say Moster because is down to earth with timeline, story and place where starts off which brings about mystery of the nameless monster, and the journey taken to put together all the pieces of the puzzle.

Anything I give a ten is entertaining, has plot, and the like. Stay away from things that are 7s until you can't find other 8, 9, and 10s. Look up people's profiles for opinions. You like a series, click on the review database and click on a user who has given the series you liked a similar mark.

As for Planetes, I enjoyed it. It'd definately be a 7.5-8/10. I watched the series then started reading the manga. To use a food analogy, because those are easy, the manga is a meal. It's got what you like, and nothing more. The anime is a feast, full of things you don't want or don't need, but an abudance of what you want.

He's seen Naruto and DBZ. I think the philosophy and general craziness of Eva would be too much. Hell, comedies like FLCL would be too much.
