hey there Dv.

Sure don't give up do you? I thought this thread had died, but you keep on bringing it back to life!

Hell yeah, I can't speak for the other users, but I'm always busy. I have switched over from General Surgery to the Stroke Unit.

It is a complete culture shock. the days are shorter and it is much slower paced. if you love independence then stick with surgery.

With 15/16 patients, there are at least 4 to 5 doctors here.

Unlike in Surgery where on 1 occasion, I was left with 41 all by myself Crying or Very sad

So you still want to be a surgeon right?

Re: Your avatar...

let me guess... is it from Fate Stay Night?

I try. Smile

I can imagine how busy you are. What made you switch?

"So you still want to be a surgeon right?"
Yes, that's right. Altough I'm still struggling with phisiology, anatomy and biochemistry. Luckily(?) this semester was about neuroanatomy, my favourite part. It's still quite tough though. Exams start next week.

"is it from Fate Stay Night?"
Correct. My favourit character from the anime. Cool

Do you know Michael Nyman? I heard him during antropology class and came to like his music:

Well, it's part of our education at this stage of our careers to change attachments every 4 months.

I actually prefer changing. You are exposed to more specialties and it gives you a btter taste of what's out there.

Doing stroke really has (re)taught me all about the neuroanatomy. I never really studied it at length at med school, so it made for a refreshing experience.

Ah...Michael Lyman. That piece you gave me over at youtube is one of his best works. I listen to www.classicfm.com a lot and that piece in particular has always been very popular. It's very soothing!

Haven't watched that show in over a year. i've been so busy at work, that i haven't caught up with my anime. I'm now watching "Gunbuster 2", and had just finished watching "kimi ga eien kozumi".

Been watching any anime recently?

I see. That makes sense. I still don't quite know what awaits me and I won't know until the 4th year.

"kimi ga eien kozumi"
Do you mean Kimi ga Nozomu Eien? Planing to watch it.

I have quite a few anime I'd like to watch in mind, but I don't have that much time, because I'm studying for my biochemistry exam. (Un)fortunately I'm not that type who can concentrate for half a day continuosly. I need to take a break about every two hours. During these breaks I either eat something, drink a cup of tea or watch an episode of an ongoing anime. This means I watch some of the current series like Toradora, Kannagi or Soul Eater.

Before my exams have started I've finished watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Quite the show. Very Happy

Sorry to hear that.

Just want to wish you a Happy 2009.

I've been working nights (9.45pm till 9am) over the new year week.

I had 3 heart attacks, 1 acute renal failure and hyperkalaemia (high blood potassium) to deal with last night. What a way to spend the new year eh?!? Smile

I'm two days late with this, but happy new year to you too.

You weren't bored at least. Razz
So your're working hard. Do you enjoy it?

I'm learning neuroanatomy. It's quite refreshing after two weeks of biochemistry.

How do you deal with acute renal failure?

FYI. Potassium is called 'kálium' in Hungarian, so understanding what hyperkalaemia means isn't that hard at all. ^_^

Crap... i thought I had replied to this thread!

I'm working hard, but do i enjoy it? Well, work in your first medical job was never going to be easy,. You're the lowest of the low and you're almost a dog. It'll come with time, but put it this way... I look forward to the time i can look at the clock and see that the day is over.

Acute renal failure is quite simple. You just need to find the underlying cause. For example, hypovolaemia (bleeding, shock etc) can cause kidney hypoperfusion so you need to restore the patient's circulation with IV fluids and/or blood.

My cases were typically obstructive in nature. Namely, prostate cancers or large prostates, causing urinary retention. If the bladder isn't emptied, then the kidney's get congested with waste and basically trouble occurs.

Sorting out the cause is easy. Dealing with the complications isn't, with hyperkalemia being one of the major ones (they could have a heart arrhythmia/cardiac arrest at any moment)

It's made worst if you know the patient already has existing problems like diabetes. If it has been long standing, then chronic kidney disease can really give you a major headache if it isn't treated quickly.

Anyway, enough of work. I'm taking it nice and easy right now. My family are abroad and I'm house-sitting. I've been occupied with writing a staff interview for A-S that Himitsu asked me to do, so fingers crossed it'll be on the front page sometime soon.

Take it easy bud.

Tez

No hard feelings. Wink I was busy with exams until today. I just barely made it but I managed to pass all of them. Two months of continous studying is really tiring. Next semester starts in 3 days, so there's no time to rest...

I'm looking forward to that interview.

Well, I'm surprised really. You'd think with all the europeans out there that this threadwould be busy.

But with only Dv, myself and Xristyan taking part it kind of gets difficult (and Xristyan's a Canadian!)

Yeah I know... I'd take part more often over there, but LTE changes it's subject topics nearly every 5 minutes or so.

It's hard to keep up with the pace.

What have you been up to anyway? Anything interesting other than studying Wink
