have you seen the movie Ray? wow... it was very well done, IMO.
i've always been a fan of Ray Charles... i grew up listening to oldies and classic rock radio stations with my parents so i heard a lot of his stuff but never knew the story behind it... anyway, that's kinda off topic Very Happy

i'd also like to know some good blues artists to go find

well, it really depends on what kind of jazz you like to listen to...I'm really into Downtempo, Acid Jazz, Fusion, and Trip hop...so if that's your thing I can probably give you a bunch of songs/artists you might like...

Hmm jazz is amazing : Charles Mingus and Miles Davis are two of my favs. If you want some newer stuff, Cinematic Orchestra is AMAZING. Those are some good starting points. Oh and DJ Shadow.

DJ Shadow? Hehe, slightly overrated but still very good....as for miles, it all depends on whether you want smooth or content...for the smoother songs, go with his earlier stuff...for the songs with more solos, improvs, go with his newer stuff (ie, Bitches Brew)

I'd shoot for Gershwin's later work, maybe Benny Goodman. Satchmo always does me in, but again, purely preference.

For CD buying and recordings, the best for getting older instrumentals are cuts made by the Glenn Miller orchestra, if it helps you out.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk is my favorite saxophonist. imagine someone playing 3 saxophones at once and sounding good. recommended: "I, Eye, Aye", "Live At Newport Jazz Festival 1962"

you could also try John Coltrane, (saxophone) his pre-'64 stuff is very listenable. after '64, he turned into an experimental auteur. I find it beautiful, but some find it hard to listen to. recommmended: "A Love Supreme" or any collection

Chet Baker is about the smoothest trumpet player ever.(in a cool, west-coast jazz kinda way) recommended: "Chet", "the best of Chet Baker Sings"

the aforementioned Charles Mingus is now seconded. recommmended: "Mingus Ah Um", "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady"

the Modern Jazz Quartet, was an amazingly fine and talented ensemble. recommended: "Django", "MJQ"

other piano players you should check out are:

Oscar Peterson, who plays the most tasteful piano jazz you've ever heard. try "Night Train"

Mose Allison, who still tours... he is more like a bluesy/jazz pianist. try "Mose Alive!" or a greatest hits comp.

if you want to hear something more recent, you should look for anything by Ken Vandermark. (who is an amazing and versitile sax player)

sorry if I have an old man's taste in jazz... this was right off the top of my head, and is wildly incomplete, but I felt like I had to post something. if you tell us what you like, we can give you better recommendations. I love this stuff.
