I don't think GTO in english version would be nice to read. You can only understand most of the jokes if you know Japanese or chinese.

Some Japanese words have similar sounds but have different meanings.
If you read the English or Malay version, you won't get the joke. Wink

Though the translator will most likely explain the joke... Wink

Sometimes though, if the translator is really skilled, he can get the joke to translate into a simialr joke in English. Sometimes the puns based on language can be weakened a little in the translation, but a little bit of creative liberty can be taken to get a funny joke that still makes sense.

The story is interesting and funny but some jokes just won't work out if they are translated literally.

For example:
Like a part where the students talk about trauma and Onizuka imagined a creature with tiger's head with a horse's body (japanese pronouce trauma which sounded like tiger horse). The english version i read didn't bother to show why Onizuka thinks that and that would make most people don't get the joke

That's a problem in many translations...because there is a lot of japanese culture in manga...and autors put it into them...

Back on topic, I think the folks that did the Ranma 1/2 project did a beautiful job at getting most of the jokes across.
