i would recommend trying hanazakari no kimitachi e.. its about a tomboyish girl wanting to attend the same school as her idol, an athlete.. well the only problem is.. its a boy only school so she has to live there pretendng to be a guy..

Since you specified (or was it just me?) comedy and action...

Houshin Engi (www.snoopycool.com) - starts out bad, though, but stay with it for a few volumes and you'll find yourself rewarded.

Bleach - seemingly cliche story of highschool-boy-gets-some-form-of-super-powers-and-now-kicks-ass, but it's good.

Fullmetal Alchemist - alchemy, great characters, and a winner of a story.

Black Cat - Rurouni Kenshin + guns + cuteness all around.

Hellsing-the art is amazing. Set in an alternate universe, vampires and freaks exist in the world and it's up to Hellsing, with the help of their vampire, Alucard, to get rid of them. At the same time, they, as England's Protestant Knights, must deal with problems from Vatican's Section XIII, the Iscariot Division. Much better than the anime (though I liked that, too).
Rurouni Kenshin-thousands of times better than the anime. The Revenge Arc alone is worth the series.
XXX-holic-it's not what it looks like. Another great offering from CLAMP with slight crossovers from other CLAMP works. This one deals with the spirit world, i.e. ghosts, exorcisms
Full Metal Panic-I recommend both the manga and anime. Teenage mercenary enters high school to protect teen girl and chaos ensues.
Girl Got Game-father enters daughter into an all-boys school because of their basketball program. She gets a crush on the star player and they end up being roomies.
Hanazaki no Kimitachi-similar to above, but the girl enrolls herself and nobody else knows she's in an all-boys school. Same situation applies.
