Right now I'm re-reading Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy (war with Japan) in preperation for starting Executive Orders (Jack Ryan finally gets to be Prez.), but since you already said you read a lot of Tom Clancy and looking for a change of genre what I have to offer isn't so much a Samurai type but rather a fantasy series.
The Sword of Truth Series starting with Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind is a consistantly excellent fantasy series set in an interesting fantasy world full of interesting characters. The main character is Richard a woods guide who has spent his entire life in a land behind a magic barrier where all magic is forbidden. One day he saves the life of a strange and beautiful woman named Kahlen from assasins. She tells him that she is looking for a legandry wizard. When the wizard is found Richard is given The Sword of Truth and becomes The Seeker of Truth and finds out that Kahlan is The Mother Confessor, a woman with the terrible power to bend the will of anyone she touches. Together they set out ot defeat the evil Lord Rahl and his minions who are bent on bringing down the barriers that protect the Midlands (a land of fantastic magic) and The Westlands (a land where magic is forbidden).
Okay that looks a little lame compared to actually reading the books. I tried not to give away too much of the plot that has more twists and turns then an M. C. Esher woodcut. It's also been a long time since I've read the first book so if I got a couple of things not quite right....
The books of The Sword of Truth series are as follows:
Wizards First Rule
Stone of Tears
Blood of the Fold
Temple of the Winds
Soul of the Fire
Faith of the Fallen
The Pillars of Creation
Naked Empire
Chainfire
Soon to be released:
Phantom
There is also a sort of prequel called Debt of Bones which relates the story of the Bone Sorceress Adie.

I just picked up Debt of Honor myself. It's weird because I've already read Executive Orders and The Bear and the Dragon (the next Jack Ryan book after EO) but I hadn't read Debt of Honor. It's pretty good so far (I'm about 100 pages in).
One great book for anyone to check out is The Last Juror by Brad Meltzer. It has a kind of John Grisham feel to it with the suspense turned to 11. I highly recommend it.

The Sword of Truth books are excellent, but rather dissapointing since Pillars of Creation I feel.
For a serious epic fantasy series that will keep you reading for a looong time have a look at George RR Martins "A Song of Ice and Fire" series- its hritty, gripping, gargantuan, and great. Hmm, Gee....

I'll look it up. I still think that The Sword of Truth series would make a massively epic anime. _________________ "Though I am not naturally honest, I am so sometimes by chance."

Memoirs of a Geisha doesn't really have anything of what you are looking for, and it is more of a girl read or an open-minded guy read. Very good, though...considering the author was an American man who just did a bunch of research.
Shogun should be what you are looking for. Samurais, old times, all that good stuff. I haven't read it myself, but I saw some of the movie and have heard about it. And epic samurai classic.

I reccommend Confederacy of Dunces, a hilarious book by John Kennedy Toole. Although the book is considered a cult classic, it did receive a Pulitzer Prize. However, don't think winning such an award means only stilted, dry humor. The main character, Ignatius J. Reily, also ends up calling almost everyone some sort of synonym for whore (courtesan, strumpet, etc.)! His silliness is the modern equivalent of Don Quixote. In other words, think about the absurdity in personality and schemes of Great Teacher Onizuka!
Here is a book you shouldn't read: Anna Karenina. It's the pits! Leo Tolstoy whomps!

It is saddly verry much not so.
Picked up Empress Orchid by Anchee Min, on my way back to the US after seeing it reviewed on richard and judy (a tv show in the UK). IVe only jsut started the book so i cant tell you much, but from what i remember its highly descriptive. It basically gives you an insight into the forbidden city and life inside. Admitidly i like what ive read so far so i would recommend it, but not if your looking for some major action/romance or something to draw you in. I find my self putting it down often just to absorb what ive just read because it really does allow me to visualise what the author is trying to show... anyways give it a go, i saw it going dirt cheap on amazon.co.uk
