Eureka Seven Synopsis and Reviews on Anime-Source
i've started watching many new anime series this season... and now i need to hear some opinions from ppl who have watched the pilot episode in order to have something to base on when i debate whether or not i should start yet another anime....
the fact that eureka seven is produced by bones sounds very appealing to me |

Personally, I find the first episode as a whole plain. The mecha fight was less than exciting though boasting good cinematography.
The male lead Renton is an idiot whose actions and personality actually pissed me off. Coupled with the series trying to promote the "activity looked upon as stupid will save the world and everyone should learn it" theme for air-surfing, it demeans itself in my eyes.
Personally, I think the air-surfing mechs are badly designed in the sense that the use of a surfboard is needless when they could have integrated its technology into wings on the back ( ala Freedom Gundam ) or onto the soles of the feet. Making a mech lug around a surfboard is pretty silly. |

yea, the whole surfboard thing pisses me off. not only that its now a weird car-morphing ontop of a surfer. its kinda like tansformers+silver surfer.
another thing about this series is that it feels and tastes like FLCL. im not sure thats a good thing for a series like this. _________________

ohhhh man talk about a dilemma. i generally don't like mecha (besides NGE and Aquarion so far) but i liked flcl quite a bit.
also, surfing robots can't help but make me laugh.... it's just so ridiculous it's funny!
ah well, i'll download the pilot and see. |

this show is kind of silly.... (the animation is kind of FLCL meets Last Exile which is cool)
But I think the show SO FAR has a good emotional center in its lead. I didn't find him that stupid... just an average disillusioned kid who fits the:
*takes deep breath*
"I want to be strong to protect my important person/ideals but I'm weak/stupid but I'm actually not I have ultimate power that just needs to be unlocked by hard work or whatever else(i.e. transformation or obtaining a super-powerful robot/ultimate weapon" archetype... man, its gettting old but I guess thats shounen's crux....
It appeals to me particulary: growing up in suburban Orange County where the people are as mundane and superficial as their political belifs, I felt alot like the main character... stuck in the worst possible locale (I could stick a Canada joke in here but I'll restrain myself). Also, skate/surf/snowboard culture is huge in California (and apparently growing in Japan) so the show will have an audience.
As far as the mecha design is concerned, sure its impractical... but in Gundam Seed the X-series (buster, aegis, duel, blitz) are shown riding on hover boards as well.... though they looked less cool.... sometimes wow-factor overwhelms logic.... (as long as it doesn't come off as gimmicky)
bottome line, at least they're not just cloning the Gudam/NGE story.... yet....hopefully it will be deeper than just trying to garner ratings... |

Well, I cannot agree with the mainly critical opinions in this thread. I enjoyed the first episode because of the drawing style and the characters. Normally I don't like mechs but I accepted them because it seems to be currently modern. Also the animation was of top quality (someone compared it to Last Exile but Last Exile was full of bad CGI and Bones does not use 3D animation in this series here so a comparison between those two series is odd).
Well, maybe the protagonist is a bit overdone in his behaviour but I liked him anyway. I am looking forward to the developement of this series.
One point I agree with you is that it visually reminds me of FLCL - but as I loved FLCL I have no problem with that. |

Uh the comparison stems from 2 similarities...
1) Emphasis on the flight scenes: In series like gundam, flight is represented very unrealisticly (i.e. 180 degree turns at full speed and banking at impossible angles) since the emphasis is more on the weapon attacks (or dialouge for that matter) than on physics.... In Eureka 7, the show's gimmick is the surf-style flight animation, therefore, making the mecha behave at least somewhat as though they're actually traveling through a medium(i.e. air) is critical... Also the show justifies the manueverability of its mecha by establishing that the sky is full of currents that behave like waves...
2) Though the character/mecha design resembles a general Gainax aesthetic (hence the FLCL comparison) the backround tends to stray from neons/pastels in favor of a more subdued color scheme (as favored by Gonzo in Last Exile) |

i actually quite liked the first ep. the animation was amazing and i like all the character designs so far (Holland, the girl, even the granddad). yes the surfboard is idea is pretty lame... but stylistically it would score full points.
i am definitely going to keep up with this show... im really liking it. yet, mb i will have a change of mind after the 2nd ep. |

i felt like falling asleep while i was watching the first ep. flying surfboards and those mechs that use surfboards to fly are just over rated and it sort of reminds me of power rangers with those transforming mechs of theirs. i agree that the main character Renton is an idiot and that his personality might actually pissed you off. during the first half of ep. 1 he was talking to himself most of the time. _________________ damn you Zero!!! why did you kill the X clones

i just found out (from ANN) that this series is slated for a 50 (are u kidding me?) eps run...
quote from ANN:
"...then spoke about Bandai's current co-production deals, Eureka 7 and IGPX. Eureka 7 is being co-produced with Studio Bones, and will cover multiple platforms, centered around the anime. There will be a manga, videogame and soundtrack releases. All aspects of the property are expected to be released in North America. The anime will be 50 episodes in length..."
so how long can the production keep surfing robots interesting? we shall see
my bet is aprox 20 eps... jeez... i guess this is just another anime made to move merchandise.... and since its from bandai, it will with any luck end up on adultswim(or more likely toonami??) fairly quickly....
I guess the surfing aspect WAS targeting an american audience.... no wonder i liked it =P |

Nobody checked out our database on how long the series is supposed to be before they find out from elsewhere This makes Episode Count Panda really sad |

| Personally, I liked the show. There haven't been many exciting new series for me this season, and Aquarion looks like Power Rangers for adults. Eureka Seven had some very nice animation, no cheesy CGI effects, good use of camera angles and I like the character designs. They do harp on Renton's dream as his driving force too much, but now that the point has been made hopefully they will let off on that. Surfing the air currents in mecha is a new one for me and makes for some good battle scenes. I also like that they haven't revealed yet how the rag tag group managed to get their mecha and why the military is after them. No cheap flashbacks, just enough story and lack of background to make it interesting. |

holy moly the 2nd ep had some stunning visuals. totally breath-taking cgi.
the fight scene at the end of it was the most beautiful mecha skirmish i have seen in a long, long time.
the story is interesting and it really provokes thought since bones feeds you the unknowns bit by bit and makes you connect everything together which also makes it all the more interesting.
the bgm and op/ed is fairly decent as well.
i am looking forward to the 3rd ep!!!!!! nanashi has some kickass subs too |
