blah, ep 2 is freaken eva rehashed. kid blacks out and the "01 unit" (well, i guess it looks more like the head from the 02 unit that asuka drives) goes beserk
...minus the angst and Oedipus complex?... i guess the blue haired girl is a bit like Rei from Eva (de-tached, aloof) ...and as in Eva the main char pilots the unit in the place of the girl... ...but she's definately not as creepy as Rei...
When I introduced this show to one of my friends, I prefaced it by rushing into his dorm and yelling at the top of my lungs,
"Dude! Somebody made an anime out of the eighties!"
Now, of course, that's not entirely accurate. But my first impression, flawed as it may be, is that this anime is pretty much everything I loved about giant robot shows from the eighties condensed into thirty minutes. And even that is an exaggeration, since alot of the stereotypes showed up in the early ninties as well and remain in use even today.
Mysterious forces that are the secret to great power.
Mysterious girls who holds the key to it all and is strangely attracted to the main character.
Mysterious giant robots that are the basis for all other robots.
Young boys who are the only ones who can save us all.
The professional entertainment groups that also work to save the world.
I know what I'm getting when I watch this show. It's fluff, pure, simple, and unrefined. If I want intellectual discussion, pure creativity, and pathos....well, I've been meaning to read some more James Joyce and Hunter S. for a while.
The cinematography is decent enough, although not a great triumph. The same can be said for the sound track. They compliment the viewing experience and enhance the impact of the events, like they ought to.
I'm actually a big fan of the mech design. Yes, there's a certain amount of "non"-science involved, but at least the writers tied the technobabble into the storyline in what is turning out to be a significant way. To me, the mechs actually make more sense than something like gundam. The old saw of boosters on the back and legs of the robot is in itself impractical. Much thought has been put into the robot's propulsion method, which gives an interesting twist to the battles. And they do use weapons (rockets and bombs spreads) that are much more centered on aerial combat than anything Char pulled out (except the times he used...er...rockets and bomb spreads).
The main character is annoying...But I'm used to protagonists I want to punch in the face. In some ways, I like them better. The true test for a main character, I feel, is whether he gets less annoying or stays the same. The more flawed the protagonist is, the more room there is true character growth and development. I might like Renton at the end of the series more because I dislike him so much right now.
The local mysterious girl, Eureka, is also very much welcome. Yes, she suffers from the Rei factor (the one mecha stereotype I'm not euthesiatic for), but she makes up for it by displaying the ability to smile and relate to other humans. And she does set up for some pretty good sight gags.
As a final bit....Man, me and my friends can't stop making stoner jokes. We don't know where they come from. Maybe it's the guy named Holland. Maybe it's the enemy robots filled with white powder. Maybe it's that all the adult characters in the closing sequence seem to be fascinated by nothing at all. We don't know.

anyways this anime looks promising...ive seen the first 2 eps and i like it so far _________________ "Our friends should be companions who inspire us, who help us rise to our best."

now then...
if only Holland and his crew were also secretely:
a rainbow-powered, midget-sized, blue skinned, pizza eating mutant ninja hair-band (guitarist is a dinosaur of course) who beam down interchangeable weapon systems from a spacestation crewed only by a woman and an orangutan...
then you would have a perfect 80s cartoon <-> 80s anime fusion =p...
and on the mecha design:
here are recycled thoughts from previous posts that were ignored:
As far as the mecha design is concerned, sure its impractical... but in Gundam Seed the X-series (buster, aegis, duel, blitz) are shown riding on hover boards as well.... though they looked less cool.... sometimes wow-factor overwhelms logic.... (as long as it doesn't come off as gimmicky)
In series like gundam, flight is represented very unrealisticly (i.e. 180 degree turns at full speed and banking at impossible angles) since the emphasis is more on the weapon attacks (or dialouge for that matter) than on physics.... In Eureka 7, the show's gimmick is the surf-style flight animation, therefore, making the mecha behave at least somewhat as though they're actually traveling through a medium(i.e. air) is critical, hence the cut-backs/drops... [also, the show justifies the manueverability of its mecha by establishing that the sky is full of some ethereal substance that behave like water/waves]
but as far as gravity is concerned... well thats another story =P
I actually liked the show, but that's probably because I have a mecha fetish. I'll watch almost anything with a gigantic robot in it. Parts did remind me of Evangelion, but how many animes out there resemble another anime. Its kinda like Evangelion except not as confusing the first time to watch it and also has more comedy in it. But it looks promising, its just the first 3 episodes so I'll give it sometime. How many animes turned out good at the end but had a sucky beggining.
Maybe there are some Eva allusions (for example the mecha design - KLFs resemble Eva 00) but the story is quite different because of the characters. In Eva we have serious and depressed characters and in Eureka 7 they are all stylish or funny. The whole mood of Eureka 7 is more comedy heavy.
Anyway I like that series very much. It has one of the best 2D-animation I have seen (maybe I said that already ^^").

why does everyone hate on this series. i mean i know its not the best but it is worth watching. it is funny and the animation is good. and it seems like itt has some soul to it.
I'm actually liking this. I do believe that Mechas on surfboards is a new concept on Mecha Anime, at least for me, and I don't find that lame nor stupid.
The character design is great, not to mention the animation. The soundtrack is pretty decent, and episode 4 told us that the plot will get complicated, hence the 50 episode length of the whole thing.
I'll most certainly keep downloading this. _________________ - You will endure the hardships, for your eyes will never drop a tear -
Yes... seems like this anime just look like a fool to most of you guys...
At first when i heard that the mechas are on surfboard i also thought that this is damn stupid... but then after i watch the first ep somehow...
I'm usually not a mecha person too but somehow something glued me to watch it through... Maybe that thing is the soul of this anime, wanting to deliver the feelings to each and everyone...

Well to me I found it quite refreshing indeed to see a mecha unlike any other (Surfing instead of rockets?? COOL!!!) They got the uniqueness factor in it... the only thing that I still found I scratched my head over is the mecha transforming, like the Autobots
But Renton-Eureka relationship is a very good watch... you got Renton suddenly confessing to her, in his excitement, in the middle of the battle, after he had landed in her cockpit and then came the kids saying "Mama! Mama!!"
Pacing is a bit slow, but that doesnt bother me... The only thing bothers me is that they didnt introduce the crew to us in a proper manner _________________ ...
