I think it's cuz of the speed it takes to send messages back and forth to each other. I think the messages are travelling at the speed of light, but its far away that the light isn't instant and it actually takes time to travel back to earth. But when the guy receives the message it actually took 8 yrs. Cuz the girl is travelling with the speed of the light that she isn't affected by the time passed. Something like that if I remember my physic classes correctly, but that relativity is really confusing . . . to me anywayz . . . .

Einstein's theory of relativity

Faster you travel, the slower time will be for your frame of time. She spent several years in highspeed warp or whatever so time didn't pass that much for her, but life continues on earth.

Kind of interesting actually, if we ever get light travel... what will people do when they return still young? Maybe people will live in light speed and never age =P Of course this is all theory still.

here's a little update on beyond the clouds

http://www.kumonomukou.com/top.html

apparently it's a new site.. and you can see that the movie's going to be and astonishing 91 minutes. This makes me giddy with happiness, seeing how it's way longer than hoshi no koe :D

They will still age, just not relative to us. Wink Actually it's more than just theory. Experiments have been performed to support Einstein's theories, in this regard any way. Clocks placed in satellites orbiting at high speed will eventually get out of sync with ground based clocks.

Have any of you seen Gunbuster? Older OAV but I think it was one of the first anime to tackle relativity. The girls are sent on an intercept mission at close to the speed of light, knowing that if they make it back to Earth it will be much later in time relative to those on the planet. The OAV had neat little educational clips that tried to explain some of the theories involved in simple terms. The animation is rather dated by today's standards, but it was one of the better OAVs at the time.

Recenetly in the news NASA discussed placing astronauts in suspended animation for a flight to Mars. It won't be the same as travelling near the speed of light, but the effect on the astronauts will still be that they'll age more slowly relative to those on Earth, so we're getting there. Time to watch some Space 1999 reruns! Smile

that anime's called Beyond the Clouds: The place promised in our early days, if I'm thinking correctly. You can find it over in the reviews section. I actually submitted a synopsis about it, but due to some accidents with the name (it actually existed in two places with different names.. just like you got confused sorta) it got deleted and I lost the synopsis. [too lazy to redo it all... whoops]

yeah

Right click this link.

Then click "Save link target as ..." and save it to your computer.

Hoshi no Koe is also known as Voices of a Distant Star. That's how I was able to find an active torrent of it myself.

EDIT: oops, forgot to mention that the file is dual audio, so there you go.

There's the Ender's Game series, which is poo. But the point is that the first book is awesome, and the rest aren't. No, that's not the point. Oh, yes. In the Ender series, the main character leaves Earth and essentially travels the galaxy. He terraforms worlds, becomes the major for a year or two, and then leaves. The first book is roughly a hundred years in our future, but the second book is about a thousand or two, just to give you an idea of how much travelling Ender did.

It's an interesting sci-fi read, but the first book is the best. The rest are meh.
