Yeah, Scryed is head and shoulders above 99% of the soapy shounen fighting animes. It also looks better than most shows, with very smooth animation (the production haven't been saving their cels) and incredibly beautiful backgrounds with a bit unusual style. It has great music, the usual interesting character designs of Hisashi Hirai, and is directed by one of the best directors in the industry - Goro Taniguchi. There's also a pretty good story if one forgets about the end.
Definitely not the best show ever but one of the very best if not the best in its genre.
Btw whoever has watched those ugly old fansubs from a couple of years ago, watch it again and see how it really looks.

I find that many animes are "stopping for char development" because they feel they have to, as if it's a requirement, not because it is necessary. That's kinda limiting and leads to lots of cliches. Story development, char development, etc. is not everything.

Yeah, character development isn't everything (worth a wopping 1 point on my grading scale) but I kinda agree with Reeder too. Scryed isn't a 10 out of 10. What I didn't really like was the ending, which was pretty open. I remember watching it and saying, "that's the end?" On a better note there is plenty of action and a storyline that makes sense.

It's a fine line id say between char development and tedious filler eps. I myslef enjoy anime where you connect to the chars and it just seems to make it seem better. I do agree tho that many do stop to develop and it gets slow. As long as they dont stop the whole series flow to develop it usually works out.

I like Scryed, but it's definitely not the best... I prefer Taniguchi and Hirai's Infinite Ryvius much more (even if its of a totally different genre)

Of course. I wouldn't give it more than a 8.5-9-ish score and it's definitely not in my top 10. But it's an excellent show with some exceptional features that differentiate it from most other animes in the genre. Many of the characters weren't too interesting (mostly the chicks) but for others there was just enough information to make them likeable (when added to what major badasses they were Razz).
Darkhunger is right that Scryed isn't even Taniguchi's best, I definitely prefer Planetes. Can't say about Infinite Ryvius though, I've been meaning to see it for quite a while but I still haven't got to it.
Anyway, I hope we see Taniguchi do lots and lots more shows with such great quality. He's quite a rarity with the consistent success of his works.

Btw the whole issue of character (or story, etc.) development reminds me of what many people use to criticise GitS and GitS:SAC - that there isn't much development and that the chars are mostly cold and emotionless. Which is exactly the point. As Oshii said in an interview: "what's wrong with that?"
It's sad that if a show/movie doesn't stick to the popular established approach to storytelling and characterization there are always people to bash it for that... That's pretty much resenting novelty and the freedom in an art form; standardization kills art in my opinion. Anyway, I guess I got a bit too far off-topic, but it was something I was thinking about lately so I just wanted to get it off my chest Smile

Hmm... I liked it, but I wouldn't say one of the best (IMO). The animation and character design is average IMO. I've also never been a big fan of the "I fight to prove I'm the stongest" plot device.

Then again, some ppl think that Spriggan is awsome, while I think it sucks the wet fart out of dead pigeons.

Hmm... this one wouldn't even break into my top 100... and I haven't even seen close to that many yet.

A shame too, because the first 13 episodes were so cool, with kind of a cool, if not unoriginal concept. Guys rearranging matter to form badass weapons to kill each other with, who wouldn't love that? Slap in the whole "misunderstood badguy" and "self-righteous good guy," and you've got a pretty winning formula. Then they slapped in the main villian. The series fell apart from there. The series lost all the fuel it had, and just became eyecandy that will fade away in a few years. The last 2 episodes were completely shameless, and I think the only reason they were there was probably because they still had too much money left in their budget. Whatever... it was fun while it lasted.

But I can see why you would rate it so high, especially if you haven't seen so many series. I used to think that Trigun was the best series ever, then I saw XTV, then I saw Kenshin OVA, then... you get the picture. There will always be a series out there that is better, in terms of action or storytelling.

Well, seeing as Castle In The Sky was the VERY first anime I saw, I'd have to say (and this is purely my subjective 20p's worth on the subject) that anything by Miyazaki-sama is the best (certainly as an introduction to the genre for anyone new)- and he has the ability to outdo himself with his subsequent creations; considering what "Spirited Away" was like in terms of visuals & pure spectacle, I daren't imagine what his newest "Howl's Moving Castle" will be like - mindblowing, methinks!!
