Is it just me or does there seem to be a hidden connection between Del Rey and Animewaves. It is almost like AW is their secret group that tests a series out by scanslating it and if it proves to be popular they formerly license it.
I mean just look at some of AW's titles that they have grabbed.
Del Rey's first title was Mahou Sensei Negima which AW did briefly.
Then last year they grabbed AW's most popular series at the time, Perfect Girl Evolution which they called Wallflower in their US release. Then recently as Gacha Gacha's popularity has increased lately, they licensed it. And then though not officially announced, they have licensed Pastel (listed in their online catalog), a long time popular AW series.
I'm waiting for the hammer to drop on either Ichigo 100% or Open Sesame considering the large fanbase. Though their other titles Koi Kaze, Tende Freeze and Inu Neko Jump also are possible targets.
So what do you guys think? Do manga publishers spy on scanslation groups or front them somehow as a way of testing out titles? |

thats an interesting note but you should post it in animewaves forums ^^
as a part of animewaves staff i have no knowledge of somekind of connection between del ray and animewaves, but if you post in animewaves forums you'll get a 100% correct answer,
also i believe that the licensing companies are looking at all diferent scanlation groups just to see which manga is popular and then they put it out
btw if you looking for good manga from anime waves you should read seto no hanayome and toshiue no hito |

I believe it's just a coincidence or maybe Del Rey does stalk scanlations groups and licensed everything that's getting popular demand? Since the animewaves staffs here have no clue about it so i think it's just a coincidence.
However, even if Del Rey does use scanlation groups to perform testing, we can't say anything about it since we are getting it free until it's licensed. By the way, i thought scanlations groups don't get paid since they are volunteers or i might be wrong? _________________ What's yours is mine, what's mine is still mine. |

| If manga publishing companies are using scanlations as guides, then Ichigo 100% would have been licensed for the English market way long ago before English scanlations even hit chapter 40. |

well badAndy told you, there is no connection
still i do believe its the same with anime, the shows that dont get licensed quickly will get licensed if there is a popular demand for it, manga should be the same, but maybe its harder to get licensing rights for manga than anime? |

| I doubt that there is a connection between the two (esp. since so many people have already disproved it =oP) but I bet that many anime companies watch fan bases of certain mangas and animes by looking at the hits a scanlator gets. It seems like it would make sense? |

| Yes, but Ichigo 100% is in Shonen Jump, whose parent company also owns Viz, who in turn is busy with a whole slew of newly released titles. Also, Viz has been lately focusing more on the younger children's market in North America. |

It's "harder to get licensing rights for manga than anime".
Not that it's hard, but it just take's longer to actually assess the fan base. With an anime, by the time the first 3 episodes have aired, you'd already know how many people are liking it because 3 eps is what i find generally to be the like-ignore threshold.
whereas with manga, the first 3 chapters probably won't be enough into the story to get things rolling, so licensors probalby wait a little longer to see how fans react to the new title. |
