hmmmmm if your rent it you could play for ever cause you get the content id code and you play and pay till you stop playing

i watched a friend play at a lan a couple weeks ago. it look pretty good, but i dont plan on obtaining anytime soon. mayb ffxii will finally get me on this franchise ^^;;

Played it, hated it, quit it... now I'm playing City of Heroes... 3000x better mmorpg...

It's a really good franchise, it's a really good idea... but it's a sub-par game. They took a wonderful idea and produced something crap-tacular

Wasn't judging it by its graphics... the graphics are phenomenal, by far the best graphics of just about any MMORPG to date (possible exception with CoH). The problem is the game itself... it's a poor system.

while, i only had a glance at the game, it didnt look too bad. Kei, mayb if u explained a little more why you were turned off by xi, itachi may b able to see from your perspective a little better

ahh... do I really need to waste words on this game?

(Itachi, stop being quite so defensive on this... I'm not attacking you or your love for this game. I'm very happy that you enjoy it, and I hope that remains the case for as long as you want it to. Don't take my disliking the game quite so personally)

Ok, here goes:

First off, I'm a long-standing MMORPG fan... I've played 'em all: UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, E&B, Shadowbane, SWG, FFXI, CoH, etc, etc

what makes a good mmorpg?:

1. story
2. unique character development
3. scalability of play styles
4. graphics
5. soundtrack
6. engine
7. gameplay
and while I could list many more... lets stick with those for now

Now then... lets analyze FFXI:
1. Story: Very promising. It's a FF game, so I really had my hopes up, and the game looked as though it would try to deliver. After about a month of gameplay, though, the story that was originally very interesting became recycled and contrived, eventually turning into a constant cycle of New Scary Monster Wreaking Havoc, Discover True Source of Evil, Big Twist, Defeat Monster and Lord...

2. Unique character development:
What uniqueness? Everybody in the game can be everything... given enough time. There's nothing to distinguish my guy from yours... eventually we all end up the same... nothing to really make your character stand out and feel special. Also, note that development, overall, takes ages... once you finish getting up all those thief levels... oh, now you just got access to ranger, time to start the entire game over again! While it was an interesting concept it got VERY tired, VERY fast...

3. Scalability of Play Styles:
A good MMORPG is enjoyably playable by somebody that plays 24/7 as well as the gamer that plays twice a week... FFXI fell through on this aspect. It didn't hurt myself much as I'm a hardcore gamer and was lvl 20 by the second week of the game... but my brother, who doesn't play as much, and would still like to be able to keep up with me? no luck. 0 consideration by this game for the different styles of gameplay.

4. Graphics:
Superb! Phenomenal! SquareEnix really knows their stuff when it comes to making pretty scenery! I'm happy I played the game for the limited time that I did just to see the landscape... but that hapiness fades fast.

5. Soundtrack:
Same as graphics... except that it got tired not because of other aspects but because eventually the music just gets overly monotanous, driving you to the point where you want to rip off your ears...

6. Engine:
Probably the worst aspect of this game. It's sluggish and lacks fluidity. Bad camera angles and bad rate of motion... as well as the peculiar nature of controls that limits you in combat. Lock on targetting and rotational motion with little regard to the z-axis... these mechanics are what drive this game into the ground more than anything else...

7. Gameplay:
Repetative, repetative, repetative... killing land worm after land worm circling the lake at Qufim... or spectre after spectre at the border to the castle within qufim... the adventure system is HIGHLY repetative, and to make things worse the world is overly crowded, making it hard for a group to get into any sort of good, satisfying rhythm without eventually being disrupted.

Yes, the game's very beautiful to look at... other than that, a failure in my opinion... now you want a pretty MMORPG that also is fluid, interesting and offers options for any and all players that try it? Go buy City of Heroes.

when i said rent earlier, my video store has $2 demo disks. Disnt mean rent. But i played it for a little and truthfully its ok but i dont feel like investing the time.
