Hi peeps!
I've just watched the 25 episodes of Gasaraki TV. I haven't watched that much anime, but it's the worst I've seen so far. The storie tries to be interesting, with much, much, VERY much diologue. There almost isn't any action which you expect a mecha anime should have to support the story!
I'am sure there are lots of peeps who loved Gasaraki, so don't see this thread as a attack at you all _________________ 'berado chirodoren' |

Here's a shocker for you - if an anime has lots of dialogue and less action that doesn't mean it's bad. It simply means it appeals less to the mass consumer. If you are that mass consumer of easily digestible material watch Gundam, etc.
Now I'm not saying Gasaraki is a perfect show or anything but just get over the fact that it's not mainstream mecha. |

It's just my opinion, I found it a very slow, annoying and bad animated series. Also I find your suggestion of me being a mass consumer inappropriate. I'am not saying you called me one, it's rather inapproprate and based on 1 opinion of 1 anime (gasaraki).

I have only one reason for replying like that and it's "There almost isn't any action which you expect a mecha anime should have". It means that your idea of what a mainstream mecha show should be is different from the non-mainstream idea that this show's director had
Anyway, I'm not trying to offend you or anything, I'm just suggesting that there's stuff that's not aiming at pleasing the mainstream crowd (which wants mecha with action) but at pleasing a limited amount of people who would enjoy a different kind of mecha show that explicitly avoids action in favor of (in this case) story development and politics. The mecha itself is only secondary. |

Isn't Patlabor supposed to be like that? All political and stuff...
Anyways, I would really like to find out if this show is any good. I keeps going on sale for less then $40. It wounder if that's because it really does suck...? |

IMHO, $40 for Gasaraki is a steal, but that all depends upon your taste. In general, I would say that it's a show that doesn't appeal to your typical teenager. More of a thinking man's anime (no personal criticism of the original poster intended here). There are several elements to the series, so it's not a straight mecha show. The mechanical designs are excellent though. Similar to gears for Heavy Gear fans. Just don't expect a lot of glorified super mecha battles.
It's starts out as a political drama, but after a few episodes we see that there is a lot more going on in the background, like internal struggles for power with some strange ties to the past. I thought that it used an interesting concept and was well executed. Great musical score and I love the OP and ED by Tomoko Tane (reminds me of Kate Bush). It's not fast paced and deals more with power struggles than mecha battles, so I suppose it would be more to the liking of Patlabor fans. If you prefer anime with a little more intrigue and less fighting I would recommend Gasaraki.

The show is very slow and requires a certain state of mind to watch, but it can be very enjoyable. The character designs are a little unnerving at times... can't really give a description for it, but if you see it you'll probably understand. Overall, I enjoyed the show. Or perhaps it's better to classify it as a "I didn't waste my time" show. If it's less than 40 for the series, I'd say pick it up... _________________ You can't hold no groove if you ain't got no pocket. |

| Yes, I agree that just because a mecha show has not much action it isn't good. In fact, I found Gasaraki to be good. I love the political setting and intellectually stimulating dialogues. The storyline is interesting, but I found the power play and politics best. I don't know whether there's many titles there that has such a deep exploration of politics out there, so in my opinion, Gasaraki is one of a kind! I guess it's a person's interest. |

As other people have said this isnt your gundam mecha. The orginal poster probably has only seen gundam and/or gundam style mecha anime.
Gundam Style mecha anime is flashy and the battles are fast and furious. Gundams usually bode well for marathon watching. It is something that is rather easy to follow and has alot of similar elements to american story telling.
Gasaraki is completely different then any of the above. It has a few more realistic aspects to it in that you dont see seventeen new mechs with more power throuhgout the series. They reletively remain at the same power.
The entire series is based around the characters and there struggle for power and plights to avoid it. The series is really made for a more adult audience in the respect that it requires a bit of thought to watch and a bit of higher level thinking increases the value of the series.
The series also sticks fairly well to its political positioning in that wars/battles aren't something you can just send out a few mechs to and fix the problem they are a very methodical thing that takes manueavering and clever thought to push through. Gasaraki exemplifies many real aspects in that respect as well.
Gasaraki is definately not for the mainstream anime fans but if you like something a little different where you have to put a little thought in it then Gasarki is definately for you. Just dont go into it thinking oh im going to be watching gundam: whatever. BEcause then you will be disappointed in the pacing and find yourself longing for the battles.
If you sit back and enjoy the ride hwen you are done with series you look back and find yourself quite pleased with the journey you took. Its a good series, deifnately not the kind of thing you pull out every few weeks to watch but once in awhile its a good view. |
