have an idea - why not contact the publisher of a series with a proposal for a rolling phase-out?
eg: Volumes 1 and 2 yanked immediately. Volume 2-3 are pulled when volume 1 hits the shelves. When volume 2 comes out, it moves to 3 and 4 no longer being available.
A notice simmilar to "This series is licensed - to read the previous chapters, please buy the manga." would be fine. It would still provide a means for people to visit and say "humm - what's this series?"
This would allow subbers to finish or get more of the series done and keep from cutting into sales once the volumes start to actually be published. It seems like everyone would win. As it is, in a year, Pastel will be virtualy unknown by comparison by new potential readers. As far as I know, this was pretty much *it* for the manga's online presence. That's actually a good portion of their potential sales other than word of mouth, which is spotty at best.
It the publisher is cool with it, then it's a win-win situation. If not, then nothing lost compared to the complete pulling that we currently deal with. I think that some sort of compromise could be reached since this site is currently one of a mere handful that actually carry these series. It's definately a potential source of customers for the publishers and maybe even a source of income for you guys if you work it right.
Maybe that's a bit far in the future for right now, but I can easily envision this as site as a place for smaller lesser-known series to get an audience in the U.S., thereby making it more likely that they get published over here/picked up by a firm that will do it for the author.
This idea is good in theory, however this website isn't big or influential enough for the manga companies to be making any sort of "deals" with us. Maybe one day it will be but not today
