I've braught up this topic on several other boards, and now I'm gonna put it up here, simply because I'm curious as to the answer. Just so you know, I'm an Eva nut, and always talk about it when given the chance.
I should warn everyone this thread will probably contain a lot of spoilers about Evangelion. Read on at your own risks.
A weird thought popped in my head when I read one too many Eva fanfics in a row.
Yui Ikari has about 99% of the time been portayed in a near perfect fasion, practically elevating her to sainthood. Now, I love WAFF, all my friends know that, but I keep going back to the series, and wondering: is Yui Ikari the saint a lot think her to be?
I'm trying to reassemble the facts from the series, but I'm coming up short. What's clear is that since the beginning, SEELE's scenario was unaltered. They wanted instrumentality since forever. Their belief was humanity had reached an evolutionary dead end, and that a jump start (or a reset some would say) was necessary, hense instrumentality.
Now, project E's original staff included Gendo Ikari, Naoko Agagi, Kozo Fuyutzuki, and Yui Ikari. Gendo's scenario deveated from whatever it was in the beginning at the moment of Yui's loss in Unit-01. At that point, he wanted instrumentality for his own reasons, namely reuniting with his wife.
But here's where my confusion starts. Put yourself in the setting before that fateful incident. Yui Ikari was one of the major figures in project E, willingly I might add. Does this mean that she was actually in favor of SEELE's original scnario? I keep remembering the speech Gendo and Naoko gave Fuyutsuki to convince him to join them, "to create a new world" I think they said. I'm not sure if that happened before of after Yui's death either.
Can anyone clear this up?
Hmm, wonder if I should make this into a poll. Yui Ikari: sinner or saint?

I think she wanted the 'new world' but probably didn't anticipate all the crap (like what happened in "End of Evangelion") to happen... She seemed to genuinly want to help make the world better, not destroy and start over... Then again, maybe you should ask the creators of Eva? _________________ "I think I may have fallen in love with you... wait, why're you laughing?"

Alright, it's been a while since I watched it, but anyhoo..
I try finding that part again, but I believe there was a part where it became clear they were only in it to prevent SEELE's vision from coming true. I'll get back to you on this.
I think Yui agreed with SEELE's original scenario that Instrumentality was for the benefit of mankind. However, I don't think that makes her (or SEELE for that matter) any worse of a person just because she wanted Instrumentality to happen. I think everyone involved had noble intentions for Instrumentality, so to answer the question, I would say she is still a saint.
Yui hoped for a new world, but did not expect it to get so bloody and vicious. She was motivated by her love for Gendo and shinji to try to make a world where her boy could grow up to be happy.

Now I could be full of crap on this, but I can remember a scene where's she's talking to Fuyutsuki about Seele's plans. I believe one of them was waving documents around, and Shinji was sitting in a buggy doing the baby thing. I don't remember exactly what the hell they were discussing, but I do remember they didn't want Seele to find out, and something like creating a good world for Shinji. If I remember correctly, (wich I probably don't) this scene was seen in the original version, but explained with much more depth in the directors cut.
