I started thinking about this after I read the "Philosphy Of Anime" Posts... (Maybe because I am tired and its 6 freakin a.m... which is early for me.)

Does anyone here feel like anime (in general) is becoming more and more similar to an episode of Scooby Doo... That is, I mean that anime series always act on a certain template and I have yet to see anything out with the possible exception of samurai champloo (OH YEAAHH!!!) that does not follow a template as a core.

I'll have to disagree with you here.
We cannot rule out most of 2005's series as they arent even half-way through.
It would be easier for me to give you a decent argument if you supplied your statement wit some examples of new anime that you saw.

I am certain, that Scooby Doo is still far worse then most anime series (at least those that aren` widely considered to be crappy). Sure U have good anime, and the not-so-good anime (as far as plots go). And while comedy series for example, do not seem to have a very complicated plots, they can in no way be compared to Scooby. Action series are like that sometimes..............enter hero, anter bad guy, kill/defeat bad guy, save the day, but mostly good action animes have subplots and defined charachters. As far as drama series goes, well U can hardly compare those to Scooby anyway Very Happy

Now Now, I am not saying that all anime going on these days is bad, and recently I have been sampling many different series to find a series I can commit myself to and watch (in anime and manga). However, while I read the first manga chapter of many different series, I see that the beginnings (at least) all follow a template and after watching/reading so many beginnings of series from somthing like Urusei Yatsura, to say... 666Satan... I began to feel like I was watching an episode of Scooby Doo, because the same couple of thing just kept happening, just different settings.

id disagree with that, but i am new to anime so i cant really say what has and hasnt been done b4 in the world of anime/manga. On the note of Samurai Champloo...... i dont think a template exists for it Razz its like they picked ideas randomly outta hat! Still loved the show tho! I guess many stroy-lines wil always be similar in some kinda way, but i guess its done that way cos it works and its the best way to get things started considering what they have planned for the rest of the story. Hopefully its enough to get your attention so you read/watch the rest of it Very Happy

Please, don't compare anime to Scooby Doo.... the idea is a little unfair. Anime is too good for that. Besideds, anime has different styles left and right.

I agree. I'd say 70% of the anime pumped out today is templated stuff. It's not like scooby doo in that every episode follows the same linear storyline but alot of animes depend on cliched characters.

The undeserving guy(nerd) with a soft heart and uneasy attitude around women.

the demure schoolgirl also uneasy around the opposite sex great at cooking and cleaning.

Spunky school girl with too much energy who seems obessive compulsive in screaming out "Oni-CHAN!" around the male protagonist.

I don't blame the industry for it, I even like it but you gotta admit, they're working off templates.

Mike11 is totally right. but thats only in one Genre which would be Romantic Comedies/ecchi. Other genres dont' follow that format, just because the most popular genre right now is the romantic comedies it would seem deosnt mean that all anime is the same. I think that it would be obvious that all animes of the same genre would have similar character and story format though.

but at the end of the day SE Lain is not Love Hina is not FLCL is not Samurai Champloo is not Gundam SeeD is not Gantz is not Elfen Leid etc. etc.

I mean, those animes dont follow a cookie cutter(scooby doo) format if you ask me.

not to mention, if you are finding youself dissapointed in the newer titles out, why don't you look to the past and find some shows, because I know plenty of exceptional series' that are 10 to 20 years old.

I know that many Animes are starting to be cliche, easy to guess and always in the same style, but there are also those very new and unique ones too.
