No! seriously, I enjoy watching it but I do wish it had stayed as a slightly comedic show, as was first intended, rather than going all out wacko and serious!
I first saw NGE about 6/7 years ago and the only reason I bought the videos (yes! videos ) is because the pic of Shinji on the front cover, reminded me of Tenchi (from Tenchi Muyo) which I had just finished watching and thoroughly enjoying. I bought the first 2 videos, and it was very enjoyable and extremely funny.
After episode 6, it takes a turn for the serious and although I still enjoyed watching it, my enjoyment was marred by episodes 25 & 26. I don't care if there's a thousand people who say they understand the ending, they're lying No one does, not really! That's why End of Evangelion was made, to placate the fans who hated the TV ending!
I have watched this show about 8 times but now I never watch eps 25 & 26, it just spoils, what is otherwise a really good anime.
The reason so many people hate it, is because so many people like it and rave about it, so just as many people want to hate, just so they can be different! Before all the hype of NGE, it was a simple show that only a few people had heard about and I enjoyed it far more then, than I do now!
On a final note, I only hate Rei Ayanami, because there are soooooooooo many guys who love her and I mean obsessively I won't say anymore, because the last thing I want is another flaming debate about why everyone loves her! (Shudders, whilst remembering the last time she stupidly brought up this subject ).
BTW, I also recommend Dead Aggressor/Soukyuu No Fafner. It's easily as good as NGE and has a good ending!

Untrue I first watched RahXephon. After that for me Eva was the clone. I know it's the other way around but it just didn't live up to it. That doesn't make me hate it, just makes it flawed in my eyes. And I still think I understand the ending _________________ Fllay IS a bitch...
Well for those who HAVE watched knows a rough idea of the story...Shinji's dad abandoned him for just 2 reasons,1st to make him a suitable candidate for the EVA,2nd,with his son's power to bring him together with his wife...
Ending? The ending was to bring him out of his own world,to somehow perfect his way of thinking...it might be a preparation for him to ascend to the legacy,as you know what happened in the movie right?...My way of seeing the ending that is..
too short (episode wise) too long (filler wise)... for the shallow anime community, NGE is like the ultimate enlightenment: an arse of a thing to achieve
but on the shallow part i think NGE delivered good action and some nice animation; in fact some of the best (probabli had something to do with it having onli 30 ish episodes... blardi slacks)
... on a side note tho, ppl dun rili hate it, they just 'rather watch something else where they don't have to think and just enjoy the light/sound show' ... i mean thats normali wat watching tv is about; leisure and relaxation... watching NGE was hardli relaxing for me, infact it brought me into religious studies (... i've found MANY stressful crap... but i've reached a point where i can't go further n e more so thank... eva? for that) other than that there's the whole issue of NGE supposably demonstrating... er no more like, i ono, expressing it's own views about biblical events n the oh so anticipated judgement day... so it got a bit controversial... but i do believe the point here is: i come home from skool after doing maths and chem and physix, the last thing i wana do is watch something thats hard to follow without thinking at all

The reason why so many people like it is because it makes you think on a higher level, and this is something most people in the world simply cannot do.
Most people won´t understand that Shinji is not only Shinji, but resembles the majority of young males and the hardships and paradoxa they go through and the burdens (women, parents, responsibilty) they carry in their young live. It´s all about being loved and accepted.
I laugh everytime I see someone reffering to EVA as an mecha anime.
Who thinks this is about mecha did not understand a bit.

Great job. I lost hope to find someone here, who is not a regular DBZ and Naruto fanboy. _________________ For ages I have drifted

PPl hated it cuz it started like a generic anime and ended like a freakish OMG what the hell happened anime.
Not to mention when u kill everyone cept the one whiney F main char, ppl tend to freak out.
Think of Naruto, and then ending it with everyone dying. Heck take any of your fave movie and kill off everyone but one person, u'd be maaaaad.
Like LOTR, and the only person left at the end of the movie is golum, wouldn't u be like...........wtf?!
I llke the EVA series overall (I've bought the Perfection Collection and END of EVA) but it did have major problems. Mostly the overly dramatic characters who area all pathetic, whiny cowards. Except for a few liek Asuka and Misato who are just plaing crazy. Beyond the character the original endings were possibly the worst ending in anime. The series setup's all this amazing plot lines but in the end all you get is "cogratulations". It pissed a lot of people off, End of Eva cleared up a lot but much of the series dropped jewels it never deiced to pick up again. I think it was quite thought provoking and an anime classic that will stand the test of time. Perfect far from it but, still damn good.
I'm not qualified to form a complete opinion on the series as a whole, because I've only seen the first couple of episodes.
However, I will say this -- those first several episodes left a bad taste in my mouth. Not because there's too much "thinking on a higher level" -- there isn't much in those early episodes. So why? Reason -- I found everything to be overly-dramatic. Morphine hit it right on the head. The line between dramatic and cheesy is very narrow.
Shinji had way too much angst. Made me think that all he could do was whine. How am I supposed to sympathize with such a whiner? He could've fallen off a cliff and died, and I wouldn't have cared. Yet Eva kept throwing more drama and angst in my face, as if I should somehow sympathize with him -- I grew irritated and stopped watching.
Granted, that wasn't the only reason I stopped watching. Some of the scenarios and dialogue seemed cheesy and over-the-top. Example was when Shinji was first sent out to battle. Retreating from this battle that they couldn't win seemed to be the best option - better to live to fight another day than to gamble with the fate of the world and lose everything there. Eh... so the top brass decides to go with duking it out, Alamo-style. They decide to send the untrained, nervous wreck of a 14 year old child to pilot a giant mech in one-on-one battle against the Angel. Where's Plan B? Then I hear -- "First concentrate on walking." Umm... ok, but the Angel's attacking? Wonder what would've happened -- "Sorry, Shinji was killed by the Angel because we didn't teach him how to walk, let alone battle. The Eva is damaged beyond repair, and now we only have Rei to save the world from utter destruction." But no, of course Shinji wins, against all logic. How'd the NERV people know? I didn't buy it. Kept watching... cheese, cheese, then - what's this? Random fanservice? I stopped watching.
I don't know. Maybe there are people that see "drama" where I see "cheesy." Maybe there are people that sympathize with Shinji. Maybe there are people that found the characters to be believable.
All I know is that Eva isn't clicking for me. Maybe that'll change when I watch more -- if I ever pick it up again, that is.
i beleive most ppl dont hate evangelion they hate the ending, like i do i even watched the end of evangelion and still didnt understand the very end but other than that its a really good series
I would like to point out that if you've been an anime fan for a while there is a reason that many older fans love evangelion.
Basically in the early 1990s when eva came out it was rather ground breaking. It had an awesome story, great artwork and a good amount of depth. There was nothing else that really came close. Well to be fair BGC was pretty good as well. But hey.
So the person who makes the comparison with eva and a bunch of anime that has been released over the last 5/6 years is missing the point, for its time eva was rather good.

Ah, Evangelion. Good stuff if you ask me.
And true, for evaluating Evangelion you must remember when it was released. Its not point comparing with modern series, because modern series usually took things from their predecesors, and one of them is Evangelion.
And of course, to give a good opinion you must watch the entire series and the Ending Movie.
By the way, I watched first the Movie and then the series, and all makes sense perfectly.
I guess that the lack of happy ending is bad for someones, but well. not always one can win.
PD: A Naruto end with everyone dead? Can be now, please? And please, I want a end of Naruto with everyone, except Sakura, dead! Pleaseeeee!!
PD2: I read in the first post something about "being from Spain or SouthAmerica" and not knowing about anime!! BLEH!!!
And Kenshin and Naruto better that NGE? BLEH!!! Saikano, yes, can be.
PD3: Comparing NGE with The Grave of Fireflies is like comparing a grafitti with the Gioconda. _________________
