I think that the reason why many people hate it a lot is because many scenes in that anime has v.strange pauses which most other animes don't have; especially the elevator scene in the later epi with Asuka and Rei is soooooooo long, that I thought my PC crashed !!!!!!!
well i watched this anime a WHILE back when i was like 12 or so, 2 yrs ago, and i really enjoyed it, but i think the reason people think it sux is cause its so dam confusing lol

I think that the pauses are the strongest part in the series. There is a great constrast between the first fight against the angels and the last. First, you see Shinji as a very small defenseless boy in a fluid animation - the end fighting against the final angel is a completely different situation; one situation that shows that the characters are only fictional and only exist in one's own mind. I don't see the Shinji that you see or that others see.
One thing that the series did, like a lot of animes, is show that the characters are only liveless dolls (GitS, Metropolis, etc.) so you really don't have to care about them - they easily could have been in a romatic comedy (like Girl Friends of Steel) or something more accessible. The television series points this out every clearly to the audience.
Misato keeps on talking to the pilots while they are fighting with remarks like: "it's not your real arm." I believe that the animation company ended up revealing a story about how they made a fake (or "dummy") story so they could survive and by the time that their funding got cut, the director had to spill his guts out showing the audience - that no matter how much you can relate (or "sync") with a character - none of the characters could truly feel pain. But, each time I do watch the series, I do get a different opinion of the show. At first, I thought that the three impacts referred to times when a man had ejaculated. The show can be seen as people reaching puberty, which can excuse Shinji's timidity. Shinji was not a late bloomer, but for a boy, it's confusing, especially when girls get that head start on boys.
The third impact is just a wet dream - ready to wipe billions of possible life from existence. I think that the whole series is a wet-dream of Shinji's and when he returns from the school dream, it is only a message from the anime company to explain that everyone can have a different view on the anime and that independance of thought is something that should be "congratulated" and not something to be shamed. That theory or observation can illuminate Shinji's fight with Toji and the last angel, Kaworu. Guy naturally start growing closer to girls and distance themselves from boys.
Tubocharged, you watched the series at 12 years old? I would be interested in hearing what you had learned from the series.
wow... wut a deep insight on my fav show of all time.. anyways, i think people hate it so much cuz its too complicated for them so they just shun it because their small minds can't comprehend its complexity and beauty.
P.S.
I'm not trying to offend people with this, but its true... i've seen examples of it with my friends. _________________ [IMG:320:100:4041b5bc4d]http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/880/cutegirl5qs.png[/img:4041b5bc4d]

Isn't it cute..
when i first started to watch evangelion i liked it but when i saw the movie i was really dissapointed.........no offence to who ever liked it but i thought it really sucked
Ahh my lazyness kicks in...I only read like half of what Geist had to say (bottom of first page) but he seems to know what hes talking about. The plot in NGE is...well whacked. Its crunched in and really not very good. What makes it so good is values and opinions being put across. The problem is most people don't understand them because it is confusing. And it is flawed, because the ending sucks ass. I'm a big fan of NGE but I do hate the ending. _________________
i reason i see people not liking NGE is the ending but the overall series is pretty good. _________________ "You can always die. It's living that takes real courage." ~Kenshin Himura
I don't think it's bad at all, but I can understand why so many people hated it.
I assume that most've you have already seen the series "Furi Kuri" by Gainax. Look deeper between the randomness and acts of violence and you can see some deep morals embedded in the episodes. However, NGE does a bad job at it and just flat out mind phucks you, so it's harder to appeal to a larger audience. That's why my friend liked watching NGE, for the violence, but it was all to prove a stronger point, but he didn't understand that...
sadly to say, i dint really learn n e thing, just watched for tha fights before, cause it confused me whenver i TRIED to think bout tha plot..but then again, i was VERY dense back then
your sig looks... odd. That is not the way you show Air Gear!
I assume you are talking about the line going to the guys ass? I didn't even pay attention to that until someone said something after I maid it. I really don't even see why that would matter... _________________

At least it shows they care. It's true though, this is the most hated on popular anime of all time. Hongfire had a forum about anime that people hate, and Eva came up in seemingly every other post. People had various reasons.
1. Shinji is annoying - this is a sense of personal taste, some characters just piss people off because of who they are. In Shinji's case, he's probably too normal and too spineless to like as a main character for those used to a badass really strong male lead.
2. The ending sucked - People hate both the TV series ending and the movie, for mostly the same reasons. The biggest complaint is that there's no closure and no conclusion. People want a nice neat ending that shows what happens to everybody and Anno refuses to oblige. Personally I think it's really hypocritical of everybody to be so critical of a unique and different ending and at the same time critical of a standard ending. It's different and I like it, but most people don't. That's personal preference, and doesn't mean the ending is terrible or good. I can understand that the last two episodes are really weird but I enjoyed them, it was for me a great philosophical escape from the normal grind of action anime.
3. Rei is boring and Asuka's a bitch - True. In fact, it's hard to rewatch Eva sometimes because Asuka is so mean and Rei is so lifeless at times. Still, I think these two are arguably the most developed characters in anime. They're insane, but the window into their souls that the anime provides is crystal clear of their insanity and really makes you feel their psychological pain.
4. ____ anime is better - Hey I can't speak on this with regards to all the anime it is compared to, but there will probably always be better anime no matter what you're talking about. My only gripe is that if you think an anime series is bad because another anime is better, then logically you only think one anime series is good, and that would be the best anime. Comparing is inevitably going to happen, but Eva should be appreciated in its own right and remember, Eva came before all its copies.
For me, Eva will always have a place on my shelf because it spawned so many ideas and anime. Before Eva, mecha anime and anime in general was action and romance. Eva showed that a series that focuses on the emotional/psychological aspects of life can succeed, and so we have series today like Elfen Lied, Jinki Extend, Rahxephon and so on. It's not like Eva is the only good old anime, but it's really good and I still watch it because it always makes me think. I also agree that despite the haters, there are also a lot of Eva fans around so it's hardly a bad series.
