I was in a pub with a friend yesterday and, right on cue, just as it hit 9pm the music went up so that we couldn't hear ourselves speak any more. Now, the pub wasn't exactly full, in fact it was kind of inverse full. So why turn the music up? Further more, I've never once met anyone who expressed any excitement for the sheer anticipation of waiting for the DJ to "pump up the volume." Instead it usually gets met with groans and comments like, "urgh!" In fact, nobody I've ever met likes loud music in pubs! And what's more, to add insult to injury, it's not just any music they play, it's shit music they play! So why do they do it?

I'm curious, is it like this in the rest of the world or is it just a british thing? And fellow brits, is it just me or does it annoy you as well?

i was at a rave party at some friends house one night and the music got really really loud cause his cousin was doing the dj thing and he had all the pro equipment. Long story short my girlfriends friend who she brought along, her eardrum ruptured and she was screaming and bleeding out of her ear. Not a pretty site. Anyway that party ended pretty quick. I myself dont mind loud music but if i was enjoying myself in a pub i dont think loud music would be appropriate. Just me though on that one.

hahahahah... that is pretty funny.

The only time my eardrum ruptured (i think)... was when I was at a military parade and some CF-18s did a flyby.... really low and i had some blood come out of my ears.

yeah, this annoys me too, although i was drunk at the time, i coulda sworn the volume doubled every 30 mins after 9pm, but being drunk me and my friends just shouted at each other over the music Razz

next morning however, it wasn't my head that hurt, it was my throat, i could barely talk for 1/2 the day Sad

haha kai you talk about ruptured eardrums like their a common thing... the only reason I can see anyone wanting to pump up the volume is to try to lure people into going inside to see what all the noise is about. I personally like places quieter... unless it's at a Flames game Very Happy now that place got reallly loud when I went

I think most DJs are pretty deaf anyway, so he probably thought it was quieter than it was. It must have been pretty heavy to rupture someone's ear drum, though. I don't think I've ever heard it that bad. It's an amusing fact that there are international laws against millitary use of certain types of sound that can be detrimental to the health. There are no such laws in place in entertainment environments and DJs have experimented with things they'd be better off leaving well alone, imo.

we don't really have pubs here (a couple places that try to serve pub food tho- why i can't understand???) i was in london for a week a few years ago. my professor (english) said ppl there go to pubs to get out of their small apartments and husbands to get away from their (fish)wives. haha.
here in austin we have quite a nightlife for a city our size. and its in 2 sections. 6th street is 8-10 blocks long and is nothing but dance and live music clubs. then 4th street (aka the warehouse district) is more sit down and softer music or acoustical so u can talk. twenty/thirty somethins usually go warehouse. college students and high school wannabees (they can't get in so they walk around) go to 6th.
i gguess this is what happens when 20 yrs ago u have a city with 400,000 ppl and 50,000 of them are students. but now we have about a million.

I would say its a pub/disco mentality to pump the music/noise to as high a decibel level as they could. They see it as an attraction. Somehow they figure it will lure teens and clubbers from miles away.

If it's too loud you're either too old or too drunk.

Too drunk or not drunk enough? Remeber I'm not talking about night clubs but pubs. Night clubs are for staggering around in a drunken stupour and trying to pick up women (at least they are here!). Fair enough if the music's too loud; makes it harder for anyone to hear you embarrass yourself. But in a pub you want to chat with your mates, not listen to music. At least, I do. I do think it's nice to have background music but that's where it should be, in the background.

Pubs tend to be for chatting with friends and hanging out yes, just a question.. why do you guys even have a DJ in a pub?

Our Pubs/Bars have seats, tables serve food very much like a restuarant and have TVs where you can watch the games.

Maybe I didn't break my eardrum back then. All I know is I had some blood running out of my ear but it didn't hurt at all.

I'd like to know this myself. Wink Not all pubs have djs. If you go to your local then you're probably ok. It's the trendy bars in town with their expensive sound systems that follow this trend.

I personally can't stand loud music. My ears are sensitive. The funny thing is, I have poor audio resolution, which combined with my tendancy to eavsdrop makes it easier to hear background noise than the person I'm looking directly at. Consiquentially, I often say "what" which makes people think I'm deaf.

Mad When you stay in there too long the loud music makes your ear drums hurt and you start to feel dizzy , not good for the brain I would say.
