| Well, by "cruel" I was referring to the rate of success (making people do so much through the test with such low rate of actually succeeding). I'm not sure if there are people like those in this anime and in Spica, but it seems like a pretty harsh test to take, in fact, a bit too hard for anyone to really pass... For example in Spica when all those dominoes had to be laid out... And here where you have to think out everything perfectly. I guess it's just too impossible a feat for me to think about, but who knows, maybe there are people who are capable of this, just not the ones that I'm familiar with. |

| darkhunger, that's exactly what they wanted - to get a very small amount of people from the candidates. In Planetes ultimately only 18 qualify. |

Right, but would that happen in real life? |

I can see see it for both tests... Just they would just all be Japanese. ^_- They live for that kind of stuff I think... That and there is a super genius Mongoilan guy in my previous class last semester... I'm sure he would have figured them out... Braniac... (I suppose in real life I can also see someone actually killing another person to conserve the oxygen as well for some reason... Just look at the world we live in today.) :P
Yeah thanks to ANBU for the group torrents. (Though I am with AlDim on the encode quality not being very consistant) Otherwise I wouldn't be seeing this until I got back to the states and that would have been cruel.
I have fingered through the first manga and unlike Yebyosh I can't say I was really all that impressed. (Or not as impressed as I have been with the Anime so far) Maybe it gets better after the first tank? Granted all the technobable doesn't may it a user-friendly book to translate. :P Maybe when I'm back in the states...
The Ninja ep. (Ep. 6 was it?) I totally dug it! Lots of kooky action and it was trying so hard to be silly that it came off really well for me. That and I like Ninjas!
Good points about the good character background, on the other hand I am feeling that Tanabe is the weakest character when it comes to background right now. Other than what was shown in the show, her past really hasn't surfaced much as far as I can tell. (Even w/ the whole back-to-earth show we didn't see her out of Tachimaki's bubble much.) On the other hand it makes her an accessible character for people coming into the series as the "Newbie" so to speak and growing in knowledge of the story/plot.
All and all I would say that this is the best out of the fall batch that I watched over the spring break while catching up. (Meaning it hasn't turned out having something that really bugs me about it... Yet...) Can't wait to see the finish. (Though not enough to be watching the raws... comes on to early in the morn for me.) :P |

Fully agreed.

The art isn't impressive and yes the jargon might overwhelm. But when you get down into the story and the characters, it grew on me. The main attraction for me was Hachimaki's drive in the manga. Unlike the anime, they did not start him off as a lazy bum. Instead he had the drive & goal but suffered some self-confidence problems. Also they didn't polarize him to be a down-and-out loser as they did in the anime. The moderation in the manga made it more enjoyable for me. Whereas the extreme polarizations in the anime made quite a few parts come across as distasteful attempts at propaganda.

And thus am I always amazed and amused by the proof of differing views among humans. I hated that episode but I love Ninjas(Shinobis) Ever watched the old old Japanese ninja action drama TV series 猿飛佐助 (Sarutobi Sasuke)? That was the series that really got me Ninja mad

You will notice that Tanabe in the manga gets more character development. Hence unlike anime-Tanabe which I dismiss as a naive ditz, manga-Tanabe's actions and views comes across as justifiable & likeable to me. It also helps to develop a sense that she & Hachimaki are truly compatible.
Yes as a comparison to the other fall animes out there, this series is good. My thought is that they altered the key characteristics of Hachimaki & Tanabe too much, which along with the (what I feel as) propaganda makes it a bit hard for me to crow too much about this series. The manga though I readily recommend |

This show is amazing. I thought the first 10 eps were medicore but man, i watched the next 13 in one go. It was that good.
i truly think this is one of the higher class of anime out there. Unlike others. this show carries across messages, and i'm not talking about obvious and cheesy ones and there were quite a few, but rather more subtle ideas that would probably mean different things to different people. This is not a show like naruto and such thats for sure where nothing is gained other than base satisfaction. Another thing is that this show is realistic as it probably depicts accurately what would happen in that not too distant future. And being such, it's very useful.
And talk about the character development and take Chensin for example. In most other shows, a character like him would simply remain the same from start to finish. Getting rejected? no problem, becomes your everyday nice guy the minute after. Glad it wasnt so.
So basically, the first 10 eps are intro and after that is where the pace starts to get picked up. I have to say I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the suddeness though and the certain character developments that would've been better served had it been carried out over a wider spread of episodes.
Man seriously, that ninja episode is da best!!!!! I just watched it again and my stomach is still hurting... the ending is the funniest

yea, just like fukui said, the characters in this anime feel realistic. not like just any plain anime character who dwells on the same felling from start to finish, these characters seem real. they react to many of the presented situations throughout the anime like anybody irl would. i liked that a lot about this anime, definitely one of the best this year _________________

The first thing that made me fall in love with this show was that there's no sound in space I've always thought that with some good direction there's plenty of sounds that can be used to make space cool anyway and Planetes proves it - radiotransmissions, music, etc. definitely do the job.
But yeah, the main characters are also nice, and once the show got going (I think the turning point was ep 7) it's been really great. |

| HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Tanabe finally gets drowned in her non-sense on the brink of death in Ep 24, and it isn't pretty... Hopefully next episode won't cop out with this cliffhanger like they did this episode with the Von Braun (though I think it will). |

Yup, my opinions of her shot up a few slots after seeing that crazy look of hers... She isn't just some idealist drone after all. |

That cliffhanger was just cruel I'm sure they'll resolve it somehow but I really wonder how exactly...
But yeah, crazed scared Tanabe rules It's all love until death comes knockin'
Prediction: in ep 25 we get resolution of the whole thing, Tanabe and Hachimaki discover their deep love for each other and in ep 26 she sends him off to Jupiter. Kinda like Gattaca's ending Oh well, we'll see soon enough. |

hahahhaa so true.
its funny though..i remember back in the early eps when i wasnt interested in the show how i wanted to smack tanabe whenever she started preaching.
i have a feeling that tanabe might end up going to jupiter too since some of the candidates are probably dead. But it'll probably be a better ending with tanabe sending hachi off going..
"Hachi-san, with your voyage, please make another great leap for mankind... not just for the rich and powerful but for all... and I, Tanabe Ai, shall remain faithfully yours.. as a port that you shall return to, to keep you warm, to shield you from harm ... and to let you dock till you ride out the storms...
hahahaha, i'm having too much fun here |
