Honestly though, I can make some sense out of most languages.. except for Finnish( I've really tried to learn it, seems i can't pound another language into my thick skull though.. not to mention it's fucking difficult) and Asian languages too different _________________ 'I learned at a very young age that I cannot trust in or count on anyone but myself.

You people are too smart. I still say that Latin is a dead language and French should be. Also, if you're going to learn 4+ languages, doesn't logic dictate that you should learn English, Spanish, Chinese, and Hindi? I mean, if you can speak those four you can communicate with more people than all other languages combined.
Oh, and I'm English and Spanish, working on Chinese (Mandarin).

I can see ancient Greek as getting to know a culture, but I've learned more culture by visiting a country than I ever could from an arbitrary set of vocal manipulations and their visual representations. To each their own, though.
Also, as a kid who's in med school, my fellow classmates who aren't familiar with romance languages (most of them) hate the Latin terminology. While it is somewhat useful for communication in a universal language, non-English speaking patients (or non-whichever language the doctor speaks) don't know how to communicate in Latin terminology, and I've generally found that doctors in or from non-English speaking countries have a very good grasp of the English language.
Essentially, and you, 07cbdj, are a testament to this, English is becoming a universal language for people educated at a university level and above. I realize that this is the biased consequence of an increasingly Americentic world, but it's still the truth. Hence, both in medicine and in law, the use of Latin terminology is more and more a reflection of tradition than of the usefulness of a long crippled, if not dead, language. Like other languages that are no longer spoken, Latin's only real usefulness comes in translating original texts into a tongue still in the canon of the modern world.
In the end, I'm not saying I agree with the destruction of Latin or any other language. Languages are dying out like species these days, and I really do think it's a shame that any part of a culture should forgotten. I'm just saying that what's killing them is practicality, and as someone who has far too much to learn already I'm not actively resisting this trend.
I'm attending a medical university too, this is the main reason I'm learning Latin, but I got to like the language and started to learn it on my own, not just medical Latin.
I like to read everything in it's original language, simply because a translation isn't the same, no matter how good the translator is. There is much wisdom/truth in Latin sayings/works.
I agree that English is a 'handy little language', but as You have said, not everyone can speak it.
Learning a language can teach you a lot about it's culture. Simply learning how they express themselves (trough their speech) gives you an understanding of the culture. It's not the same as visitng the country or reading a book about it, but it's necessary if you truely want to understand them. _________________ Dv
