I, also, tend not to get disappointed by any discrepancies from original texts. I mean, why would I want the movie to be exactly the same as the book? or for the anime to be exactly the same as the manga for that matter?... if it was exactly the same, well... that's oftly boring. I'd be watching something where I know anything and everything that's going to happen AND exactly how it's going to be portrayed... LAME! I much prefer getting a new experience from an adaptation, being exposed to new and different views and concepts upon the text.

i actually just read throughh an article on hp in entertainment magazine. The brought up some good points.
-the directors name is Alfonso Cuaron
-he will not be returning for a fourth film
-the fourth film will be 1 prolly really long film not a somewhat expected two
and they brought up a point that made a lot of sense. when chris(previous director) did the first two America lapped them up cause we were all a little hp crazy. He himelf is a storyteller. Alfonso(new guy/very funny name) is an artist. This is prolly the best way to sum up the different styles.
Also those who bothered to read my first post will notice i brought up Alphonso previous work. His spanish erotic comedy is called Y Tu Mamá También. Very riske'. I heard radcliff had to watch it on set with an adult cause his dad wasnt there to supervise. Just the latest.

Quite mediocre for a film, but a good adaptation of the book.

Alfonso also directed "A Little Princess," which was also a children's book. He's quite the visionary, and I think delivered a new flavor for Potter and gang. However, his decision to cut the flashback sequence between the four friends and how they saved Snape was a huge oversight. I don't think anyone who didn't read the books would have known the origins of the Animagus, or why Harry's Patronus appeared as a stag. That would have taken 10 minutes of the movie, and considering the film's shorter length, it could have used a bit more background.

But still, that part was quite unimportant, and in the storyline, was only used to build the character of Remus Lupin, whom I thought was fantastic. I've always imagined Lupin as a bit more gloomy, but this version of him was wonderfully cast. I can't wait to see whom they cast for Voldemort, as long as it isn't Mr. Bean...

In the long run though, the film was much too confusing for people who haven't read the books, and really had nothing going for it. Special effects were merely passable, and just like the book, did not push the story as much as I would have liked. The characters introduced are great, but the lack of real conflict was depressing.

4th book to be directed by the same guy that directed "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Donnie Brasco." Interesting choice... Hopeully isn't messed up, considering how good the fourth book was...

Just saw it today... bit disapointing. Having read the book I expected a bit more. Not really in terms of sticking squarely to the text but just the general sequence of events. It seemed extreemly rushed at times with the actores trying to fit their character while speaking a bit TOO quickly. (Example, Uncle Vernon's lack of emotion compared to his expressions and tone of voice from the first 2) Anyway, it was still pretty good, aimed for a slightly older audience and well the visualls were damn good. The hippogryph scene was nice and the quiditch match was damn well done.. demeonters coming from all over and the rain Cool

overall i'ld give it a 3.5/5 Potter #4 better not be rushed like this... It has too much good stuff to cut out.

Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr Bean) can play a very good villian if he wants to. Just watch BlackAdder. Sure it'll be a comedic, smart-mouth, snide, cruel, capricious villian but an interesting villian no less!

But personally I think Arnold Vazloo (The Mummy & The Mummy Returns) can play Voldemort.

Hmmmmm Arnold Vazloo .. I def see him doing a good Voldemort.

As for mr. bean... NO. He can do Bagman.. maybe. What im most interested to see is who will be playing Moody. I mean they have to go through a hell of a lot of make up but have to be able to pull off his character. I just can't think of anyone for that part.

i think it was a mistake to replace neville, although the new kid somewhat looks like him (or perhaps its still the same guy but slimmed down), the old neville was much better. and perhaps should've introduced Cho, might be too abrupt in the 4th movie. noticed the area around hagrid's hut is now more rocky and inclined, aint too bad; new dumbledore seemed to possess too much energy at times..

yes, i also eagerly await the next movie for the 4th book is by far the best. and can someone tell me what those creatures are called, the ones that only harry and neville can see? (from 5th book?)

Thestrals. From the way they did Buckbeak im confident they'll make em look just as good as we have imagined em .

Oh btw, the same actor played neville... i was pretty shocked when i saw him too. Time to replace em. He just doesn't like look Neville anymore.

Anyway i don't think this movie did much for explaining things or introducing important characters. Cedric had about 2 mins screentime of which he was mostly owned by the dementors.

I didn't like the 3rd HP movie. Here's why:

Alfonso Cuarón has his talents, but they just don't bring out the best of Harry Potter. Even the atmosphere he'd set for the movie was wrong, imo . . . it was like watching the setting for a magical "Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde". I know that the producers as well as Cuarón wanted to signify the fact that Harry Potter and the other students are growing up and getting older, but while in the process of this attempt, they completely lost the essence of what is Harry Potter . . . and they also forgot that the movies are supposed to be mostly geared towards keeping the attention and imagination of kids. Good for all ages . . . that's what it's supposed to be. GOOD FOR ALL AGES. But this wasn't the worst part of it.

The way Cuarón portrayed the characters and what they were going through, it didn't really do much for the audience in relating to them. He didn't really bring out much of the "emotion" that was supposed to be there. He did more with getting in their faces for dramatic effect then he did anything else. It was hard to feel a connection with the characters, and since a big part in producing and directing a movie is to generate the potential of this connection, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" lost a lot in a big way.

To be more fair to him, though, I think my only REAL issue with the movie was the way Cuarón jumped from scene to scene, and how he didn't really bring the story together in a way that would be attention-grabbing and interesting. It all seemed too chaotic, slapped together, and even "repetitive" (in the way the scenes were all grouped together so that even though they furthered the story, there was nothing there to set one scene apart from the other as individual stages of the story). There were no "ups" or "downs"---everything moved at the same level, in the same straight line. Even the climaxes didn't feel like climaxes.

I felt like I was going brain dead.

Whatever the reason may be for Cuarón using this "choppy" (and dull) method of portraying the scenes, it wasn't the best thing to do for this movie. I think I could've been a lot more satisfied with it had it not been for that one thing. In fact, that one big problem is probably what lent to all of the other major problems that I had with the film. It kind of helped create those effects.

And to top it all off, I felt that a lot of the acting (from a few of the other characters) seemed forced and unnatural. Didn't really appear realistic.

So for myself, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" was incredibly disappointing. I was shocked at how different it was from the first two movies, especially in the way it failed to capture the "magic" of Harry Potter. It seemed so sloppy and "jerky", and it got very boring at numerous instances. The movie had its usual Harry Potter humor (the script is going to remain of the same nature, despite the direction it's taken), but how the script is executed makes a big difference. As I see it, only die-hard Harry Potter fans would consider this any sort of gem.

But everyone has their tastes. Cuarón is good at what he does, but I don't care much for his style, especially since I don't think it really fit Harry Potter. Still, I'll be buying the DVD when it comes out if only to complete my brother's collection.

At least they'll be getting another director (Mike Newell) to take care of the 4th movie. I guess I'll see where that one goes . . .
