Has anyone read the sgt. frog manga?
If not i would highly suggest at least glancing through it the next time you are at your local bookstore.
It's pretty funny and is about how some aliens(keroninans) get stranded on earth and end up in several peoples homes, and they have to keep this secret from the outside world.
Their mom is a manga writer, so she comes up with the new manga lieutenant toad, based of the keronians who ended up being left behind on earth, after failing at taking it over.

Ahh, Sgt. Frog, my personal favorite. I remember last year in May when I got it and my friends were like "wtf?" I'm glad to have finally found some other people who like it. But, I can't believe I gotta have the long wait for volume ten!

your all kidding me right? i mean, Sgt. Frog is like my favorite manga ever! its hilarious and interesting in its simplicity. at first it kind of looks like a kids manga, but once you get into it, you cant stop reading. its like..... meth.... i guess. little green alien meth. personaly, i have every book up to date (and am ANGRY that i gotta wait untill december for #10. grr....). its the kind of series that is purely for fun and comedy and action- not one to read if yur looking for your shoujo lovey-dovey gender-switching pretty men-that-look-like-girls manga.this is a mans manga. or, maybe just anyone with a good sense of humor's manga.

give green a chance.

It's weird how unknown this manga is in rest of the world while it's one of the most dominatingly popular anime/manga in Japan. There are tons of merchandises for this.

I recently ordered 9 volumes of Tokyopop versions but I have a question to anyone who's read it. Do they preserve the honorifics such as "-san, -chan, -dono, etc."? It really really irritates me when they don't use them and use English way by just using names. Delrey manga keeps the honorifics intact and it seems to give more authentic Japanese feel to it.
But by the sound of its title "sgt. frog" instead of "Keroro Gunso", they probably didn't preserve many of the literal translations. I also hope they provided some cultural and anime references for some of the jokes, because this manga contains lot of parody.
I got desperate and decided to buy the manga because fansubbing for keroro gunso anime seems to have stopped... and I was enjoying the series so much... damn.

Yes, they preserve the honorifics, and yes there's a lot of anime and cultural jokes. ^_^ That's why I love this series.

I'm also surprised to see how little known this manga is, or how little liked it seems to be, ITS one of my all time favs.

I like it coz of all the cultural/pop culture jokes and references, the slapstick comidy, the play on words~that i admit, i dont always get.

For ppl who think its just another crappy shonen joke manga, its not! Its got a little for everyone, tho most the time its a parody.

There is Lady Moa (magical girl), Kururu (provides the mechas), Giroro (romance, i think...),Keroro (comic relief), Natsumi and Mom (fan service), and Tamama (kawaii factor, but not as you know it).

This manga is a must read, had me rolling in paine from laughter!LOL so much.

So far I love this manga. I've started buying tons of keroro gunso merchandise too. Embarassed

There are so much references to other anime and parodies. Mainly Mobile Suit Gundam and Evangelion appears most often. The mangaka also occasionally puts in characters from his other manga and anime such as Nana 7 of 7, and Arcade gamer Fubuki.
You may need some extensive knowledge on various Japanese pop culture and tv shows in order to understand the parodies, because Tokyopop doesn't explain them...

Also, I didn't like how they translated SOME honorifics and left some honorifics intact in Japanese.

For example:

Tamama calls Keroro as "gunso-san", but they translated it as "mister sergeant sir".

Keroro calls Fuyuki and Natsumi as "Fuyuki-dono" and "Natsumi-dono" in original, but Tokyopop translated them as "master Fuyuki and master Natsumi"...
oh also Keroro usually calls Angol Moa as "Moa-dono" but they also translated that as "Lady Moa".

Another disadventage this Tokyopop version of manga has is, that some characters have certain unique speech patterns in original but they can't express that on translated manga.

For example:
Tamama always ends his sentences with "-desu", kinda makes him sound cute.
Tokyopop omitted this completely, however when Tamama was disguised as someone else, Natsumi figured out it was Tamama because of his "-desu". Tokyopop decided to put in the "-desu" just this time, because it wouldn't make sense otherwise...
although I doubt this would have made any sense to anyone who didn't know about Tamama's original Japanese speech pattern.

I'm very disappointed with Tokyopop's quality of translation. They don't make the effort to explain anything at all. I'd say about 30% of the contents were lost by poor translation and lack of translation notes.

I rate the translation on this manga 2 out of 5.
However, this is awsome manga and I rate the manga 4.5 out of 5!

I love this manga. It's a different kind of wacky from the norm and that's always a good thing. I'm in the military and every time I see their ranks and how they are organized I crack up. I have a question though. I am new to japanese but wouldn't Gunsou-sama be translated as "Master Sergeant" (An actual and quite high enlisted rank in the army)? If so that's a pun I'm surprised hasn't crept up yet. Anyways, Sgt. Frog is definetly the coolness.
