| I love this manga. It's a different kind of wacky from the norm and that's always a good thing. I'm in the military and every time I see their ranks and how they are organized I crack up. I have a question though. I am new to japanese but wouldn't Gunsou-sama be translated as "Master Sergeant" (An actual and quite high enlisted rank in the army)? If so that's a pun I'm surprised hasn't crept up yet. Anyways, Sgt. Frog is definetly the coolness. |
I don't think that would be the case.
Where did you see the word "gunso-sama" in the manga? I don't remember there were any characters who calls Keroro with that name. Fuyuki calls him just "gunso", Tamama calls him "gunso-san", Dororo calls him "Keroro-kun".
A week ago I bought about $170 worth of Keroro gunso merchandises... Looks like their invasion into my room has just begun. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

If not i would highly suggest at least glancing through it the next time you are at your local bookstore.
It's pretty funny and is about how some aliens(keroninans) get stranded on earth and end up in several peoples homes, and they have to keep this secret from the outside world.
Their mom is a manga writer, so she comes up with the new manga lieutenant toad, based of the keronians who ended up being left behind on earth, after failing at taking it over. |
I read the first volume of it. Kinda got confused with the frog and the kids. So I stopped after the first volume. |

Why? its realy good!1 it has slapstick comidy, play on words, cultural jokes and pop culture referances. Its actualy a little mature........thought then the slapstick kicks in, and it all goes kiddy gain.....
silverkitsune> I think tokyopop couldnt do all that much with the translation because they are trying to target a English speeking audiance, and let us not forget that maga is only relativly starting to become main stream, it would be hard to explain some of the cultural jokes and language used. And some of it is probably lost in translation anyways (which is not uncommon in japanese to english translations).
Personaly I think Tokyopop did a good job with it and with translating some of the honorifics to make more sense to those who do not know about such a thing, they couldnt of made manga only for fans, they wouldnt of made much money otherwhys......and this is odd for me to say because I agree witht he statement that Tokyopop's quality of translation is usualy low. |

Yeah, I know... and that's really the problem.
There is too much of gap between someone like me and the general public.
But I do find it fascinating that manga is really becoming more popular in north america. Only 5 years ago, I'd only see manga in comic book stores, but now days manga always has its own section in all major book stores. It's an odd feeling, seeing something so "subculture" like manga displayed infront of a bookstore in a crowded shopping mall. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

Yes, I'v noticed that too.....in fact, HMV and Virgin Megastores now have sections for manga too...and to think just two years ago the closest thing you'd get to manga/anime would be Akira film or Pokemon series...
But yeah, I think sadly that in many ways manga has to be americanised simply because the culture and language in west and japan is too different at times... |

At least it's not as bad as two or three decade ago, when they'd change the entire cast's name and show's title into some Americanized version. When I first heard the term Astro boy, I was like "who or what the heck is Astroboy?" and nobody knew who Atom was... _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

thanks... for stating the obvious. Keroro gunso is written in small print below the Sgt Frog English title. I never call it by name Sgt Frog, I refuse to use English titles for any anime or manga. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

I actualy call it both Sgt Frog and Keroro Gunso.
Silverkitsune> yeah...I think the title was changed for the same reasons as I posted before....most English speaking ppl wouldnt know what Gunso means....why do you refuse to call them by english title tho...? |

Sgt. Frog sounds incredibly awkward to me, so I rather not use that title at all. Keroro Gunso sounds so much funnier and appropriate. The author came up with the title, so I'll call it by that name. And really, I don't see the big reason for changing titles into English versions. People don't start reading a manga just because of the title, at least I don't. And Sgt Frog is little misleading, since Keroro doesn't really mean frog. _________________ [IMG:258:200]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v435/ypark/sigs/3fsn.png[/img] |

| Yeah....thats true...the title is only part of the attraction..although I was nearly put off by it.......when I first saw the title Sgt Frog....I thought it would be stupid and for little kids....it realy wasnt what I was expecting......good thing I read all those great reviews of it.....otherwise I would have missed out on a great title (so to speak).... |
