this is best explained in a series of checkpoints since I'm too lazy to write prowse right now...
- Minagi was born
- Minagi became a daddy's girl
- Mother got pregnant again with Michuru
- Michuru died during childbirth
- Mother went loopy with depression
- Father left loopy Mom and sad little Minagi
- Since Minagi was Daddy's-girl, Mother "replaced" Minagi with Michuru
- Ghost of Michuru becomes Minagi's friend
- Michuru and Mother never met until Yukito brought them together
- Upon meeting Michuru, she kinda snapped back to reality and realized that her living daughter was Minagi
- Having the family "fixed," the spirit of Michuru moved on... hinting that she took on the form of Minagi's half-sister

Yes Minagi was Daddy's little girl. Her mother felt jealousy and lonely because of it she wanted another child to whom she can call mommy's little boy/girl and to fill in her loneliness. As xeno said, Michuru died during birth and this caused Minagi's mother to suffer depression and broke down and went a little insane.
Was it explained why her father left? Memory is hazed -_-

hmmm new question: kids at the end of ths show: Ryuya and Kanna????
evidence:
-I had a memory (indicating past)
-You wanted to see beyond it right? (Kanna wanted to see the sea; part of the reason for journeying)
-Blue hair, greyish brown hair
-In anime, they both liked each other
If yukito is the reincarnation or Ryuya and Misuzu is the reincarnation of Kanna, then those 2 could also be misuzu and yukito; having their wishes fulfilled...or...it can get really confusing so I'd like to hear a couple of other opinions first

it kinda brushed past me the first time I saw it, but after some thought and some discussion about it here, that was the conclusion I was drawn to accept. This show's overall theme seems to be about reincarnation, so it's very well possible.

yeah, but the reason I still didnt like the show its because... Misuzu/Kanna will once again suffer the same fate once she reincarnate. And this time, there'll be no more yukito/Ryuya's decendents...
maybe he will reincarnate though...
but its just that... it might show the powerful feelings they have for each other, but I wanna look at the big picture... Misuzu still gonna suffer. |

Which span of 1000 years does "1000th SUMMER" refer to?
From AD 994, when Kanna was sealed in the sky, until AD 1994.
The significant event in 1994 was the birth of a new pair of incarnations of Ryuuya/Yukito and Kanna/Misuzu, finally free of the endless cycle of reincarnation that they were trapped in for the thousand years. It is this pair whom we see walk away hand in hand at the end.

I think what happens after Misuzu and Yukito is that they are finally on their way to breaking the curse. With Yukito in the form of a crow, he can now be close to Misuzu. Perhaps that what it took to break the curse... we'll never know, but it's hinted that happy times are ahead with the way the two children on the beach are acting.
Even if the suffering remains, it all makes for good storytelling because it conveys the message that life isn't always fair and sometimes good people do have to live tough existances.
poor Misuzu... ;(

I always get choked up when I hear that... I dunno, it's just such a romantic way of expressing a millennium... so much better than saying something like "a thousand years later"

FWIW, that's not entirely true. Don't let it stop you from watching though, it's a beautiful story.

it's like the passing of the torch... the boy and the girl at the end are the next generation of Yukito and Misuzu. It's speculated that they are the first uncursed pair.

aaah, i just noticed that there were kanon girls in the 2nd episode >____< at first i thought they were some lazy designs cuz they looked simillar to the air cast... but then i saw the bag with wings... ah man i'm so slow....
