yeah i think death note is not a mature manga... but it can be considered as a manga that has a serious aura... no echhi stuff and everything... pure mystery (so maybe it was suggested as mature manga)
i have a childish 16 yr old brother whose fav manga is death note

Monster-I think this is one of the best I've read so far. None of that "first high school crush/kiss"-stuff. It's intellectual and well-written.
Blade of the Immortal-If you're into action, this has tons (and lots of blood and gore, too). Beautifully drawn, the characters are very memorable and the story will pull you in.
Death Note-This one has been mentioned several times. It's also a pretty intellectual manga. I wouldn't say that it's written for children; probably geared more towards older teens and young (or maybe even older) adults.
If you want mature, Gantz is probably what you're looking for. It has little or no humor at all, plus there's blood, gore and nudity(if you're into that).
I'd have to suggest Gunsmith cats. The story isn't that deep but it's got lots of action, and was a very fun read. Plus it has lots of mature content. more info right here...

tenjho tenge is among the best mature manga i've ever seen
it got fine fighting scene although its a little bit over reacted but its still great
not to mention it even got rape scene too in the manga for the adult viewer. _________________ "This is the way the world end, not with a bang but a whimper" - T.S. Elliot

What up,
I'm new to manga and I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the direction of some more 'mature' manga series. And by mature I don't mean graphic sex (though that is acceptable). I mean more serious manga with adult themes, none of that 'first kiss' 'high school drama' sludge, I'm looking for something an older reader would enjoy. Something dark is also appreciated. Please and Thanks

You want mature manga and good manga?
Then try no other than Berserk
In my opinion, it puts all mangas to shame.
Don't buy tenjo tenge, since CMX is killing the manga by editing it, so they canhave a kids rating.

if by mature you mean a little bit on the "darker" side, you should look up jiraishin, vagabond, blade of the immortal. death note is a bit of a new take on shounen manga but its darkness tends to differ with the former...and the fact that its published in shounen jump (or is it sunday?!), which incidentally, caters the adolescent demographic.
for scanlations, i recommend snoopycool.com. they have some interesting titles up, plus the translations are good. there's not really a lack of it, and i have to disagree that manga is not directed towards the more mature audience (please don't throw potatoes at me!). there's manga for everyone; virtually anything and everything can be made into a manga (there's about food, dogs, gangs, vampires, cars, ballet, etc.). it's just that there's so many titles that only how many get extremely popular.
you should probably google "sunday afternoon magazine". this is run by kodansha which caters to the older crowd. you can get an idea and decide on which titles will suit your taste. hope this helps you.
