Manga is not new to Americans as Antarctic Press started what was then the only publisher doing manga, IIRC. They put out titles like Ben Dunn's Ninja High School, Fred Perry's Gold Digger and others.
Creators like Adam Warren did stuff like Dirty Pair, and we even had manga version of iconic Marvel superheroes during the Marvel Mangaverse event a few years back.
Now, it seems that almost everybody is into manga. DC with their CMX line, TOKYOPOP, Viz Media, Dark Horse, etc.
However, only several of these publishers publish original manga created and developed by Westerners such as TOKYOPOP with their aforementioned Rising Stars of Manga and Original English Language (OEL) manga, Seven Seas Entertainement, Dark Horse with Megatokyo, Antarctic Press (still with some of their original titles), Oni Press...
The rest are mainly webcomics.
With manga being such a phenomenon here and all over the world, one can only look forward to more original American manga/Amerimanga/OEL/pseudomanga in the near future as these manga-influenced fans and creators grow up and acquire and develop their art styles accordingly.
Seven Seas is currently developing and putting out Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir's Amazing Agent Luna, Ted Naifeh's Unearthly, etc.
Oni Press' got Sharknife by Corey (The Rey) Lewis, Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim and more.
Some of these are already established and known creators in the industry such as Nunzio & Christina (New X-Men: Academy X), Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin), Jason Henderson (Sword of Dracula), Jen Quick (Once in a Blue Moon).
Therefore, would you try these titles? Or do the original Japanese stuff appeal to you more? Why is that so?
I find that the Japanese Manga interests me more. The American Manga seems to be a bit too "Americanized" With a lot of the emphasis taken away from the story and shifted towards more action and bigger bangs. This doesn't mean I won't read them at all, but I still prefer Japanese Manga.
Some of the manga that's come out of American artists also tends to shift away from the traditional manga look and feel and more towards a Marvel Superhero's type of art.
Well, for my point of view, Americans tend to give the credits to the "Hero" that makes many sacrifices losing even his friends and family to save the world.
Then for Japan animations, if the hero cannot save the people he really care for, he's nothing like a hero even though he succeeded at his task.
That's the main difference I see between the two types of stories and I much prefer the Japanese way of seeing it. (even though I am sadly living in north america )
Japanese mangas is more interesting cuz it includes about almost everything including our daily life while American comics is a bit more on the superhero, aliens type.
Well, I find that manga still looks a bit "imported", and as such there are still very few authors which makes truly manga overseas, and their style is more like a cross-breed between traditional superhero comics and japanese manga (not that this is a bad thing, mind you).
Anyway, if I have to choose a non-japanese current of manga, I'd stay with Iberomanga (spanish), specially in the case of comedies or the current trends in european (specially french) manga, which usually sports a level of detail and care far greater that typical monthly series, due to their lack of such time constraints.

it will never ends when a manga get americanized, unless its sales drops then the series will be discontinued
i was once told by my friend that devilman manga being imported to america, and after 3 issues the series are stopped, why?
because Mr. Go Nagai (the origianl creator of devilman) dislike that his art are redrawn and ruined
its all about cultural difference and gap, that makes it happens, so far i never finds a really good american manga, there are bit that has good artwork and story like metalgear solid manga, but nevertheless i never get the feeling of reading an original manga, when i reading americanized manga.
why there is american manga? IMHO it is because of trend and the people who runs the business thinks there is money to make, because the usual 20 pages comic doesnt give much profit anymore. i myself read american comic, and i think they are superb, but one thing always keeps me from collecting or continue reading till it ends, that is because it never ends (so far all the comic i read tends to be like that) _________________ I want you! to curb your consumptions
I love pure japanese ... even thought never read it... because when manga is lisenced by U.S. has too much censorized panels... not just nudity or explicit sexual contect ... all are altered to weaker versions... I mean the originals are destroyed, I mean I feel sorry for the manga authors.

I prefer Japanese Manga for sure... American comics are too much of PERFECT HERO type... And the story almost must be about a super hero... I get bored of that... In Japanese manga, you can be just a normal teenager and can still be the main character... _________________ I don't want to kill you, so you better don't make me do what I hate to do...
