| Yes to get the whole story you really have to be one with the charachter. If the anime is good and you can`t do that, you lack imagination |

Without an imagination, anime watching would probably be pretty dull. After all, what's the fun in watching a couple of animated characters run around like fools? Thankfully, most of us who watch anime do have a nice imagination (especially those ecchi-fans), and we tend to enjoy the broad array of series out there.
I think what makes an anime great, though, is its ability to make the watcher empathize with its characters. The goal in every storyteller is to entertain the watcher and what better way is there to entertain someone than pulling him into a different world where dragons and angry girls with mallets exist? |

The entire point of moviemakers, storywriters, authors, etc etc, is to draw people into a world they created, to bring out a response. Some characters are made so that the viewer/reader will love them, others so we will hate them. That's the intention, and honestly if you aren't into a show, why do you watch it? It's either going to be focused to bring about an emotional response, and usually to make you think about something. Even if that's not the purpose, it probably will give you something to think about anyway.
If a reader/viewer can skim over your material and come out completely unchanged, neither better nor worse for it, then it was pointless, just a waste of time. So if you enjoy a show, follow the writer's intentions and get caught up in the story! It's usually pretty rewarding even if it is sad (Air, DN Angel, etc)
Whether you're a guy or a chick, I don't think really matters, I'm a guy, but I'm not going to let that keep me from enjoying an anime or manga that's why I got into it into the first place.

I almost always get attached emotionally to a character or characters in anime. I mean Fruits Basket had me on the edge of tears a lot and then had me laughing my ass of tons too. I could name lots of other anime that made me feel that way. But it doesn't always happen...like Cowboy Bebop, those characters were soo detatched and emotionless that I felt no remorse whatsoever when something bad happened there....(girl by the way) And, I have never actually cried--tears in eyes yes but no overspill. Samurai X was really really touching |

I don't think you can 'enjoy' an anime series unless you get emotionally attached to one character. To relate to a character is to understand them. If you happen to find every character annoying, I don't think you would continue watching that anime.
For me, all my favourite anime shows relate to how much I love the characters. It's hardly the story. |

| Speaking as a writer, if the audience does not feel empathy for the characters in a story, then the creator of the story has not done a very good job. |

i always feel character's sorrows, dissapointments, happiness, etc...
probably the only time i don't share a character's feelings is when they're annoying, feeling sorry for themself, or when they're being just outright cocky.
I love it when i can relate and feel for the character(s)....it's like having the power of empathy. and i don't think guys should be embarrased about it.....i think that's wat makes certain animes so gr8! if characters are able to project their emotions onto its viewers...then well it has served its purpose. That's wat truely makes an excellent anime. _________________

Well anime characters are supposed to have extremely exaggerated emotions right? So it should only be natural for the viewer to feel those emotions.
Music adds a lot to this too. Humans supposedly react to certain motifs in the same way, so it's natural to feel the emotion from each scene. |
