I download all bittorrents with Azureus and play most files with Windows media Player unless WMP don't support the type of file the anime runs on. If not, then I use VLC Media Player. _________________

Episode 2 is out and released. I just watched it and find this anime getting more interesting by the episodes. I just don't like how lightly the word "God" is thrown around and I'm not sure I know the purpose of one yet. It could be to help people out but I thought worshipping was supposed to be another way around.
The next episode is "It will be done by some other fansub group!" Riiiight.... Is this the real name of the episode or is the fansubbers making a statement? I hope episode 3 comes out fast though. |
Japanese Shinto is the oldest religion in Japan although it does not have nearly the amount of ritual or formality of any other religion. While Bhuddism is also significantly ingrained in Japanese spirituality, most Japanese still "practice" Shinto as well. Most Japanese families have small shrines in their house and it still very much a part of their culture.
Shinto claims that there are an uncountable number of gods, or kami, around us in the world. This river has a kami, that real big tree has a kami, a prominent hill has a kami, basically everything has kami associated with it. Kami vary in strength, from very minor kami such as the kami of a small pond to Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess. The relationship of human beings with kami is generally a mutually beneficial one. People who respect and venerate a kami will be blessed by it and receive help while those who disrespect or insult a kami will be punished. A kami (Amaterasu's grandson I believe) created Japan and most major Japanese noble families traced their lineage back to a kami. The imperial family claims its lineage traces all the way back to Amaterasu herself, which was one of the major reasons for their claim of the divine right to rule.
As for how loosely they throw it around, the translation of kami as god is not entirely precise. Even compared to the gods of, say, the Romans or Greeks, kami are usually not that powerful. Even the weakest Roman god is far more powerful than a human. Kami, on the other hand, are limited in their power. The kami of a small stream might be able to do little more than flood (if a village needed water or needed to be punished) or dry up if a villiage needed to be punished). Spirit may be a little more accurate in its connotation, but then you run into confusion as Western languages use spirit to mean other things as well, including a soul. Spirit also comes with the connotation of something abstract, a force for example, when kami are very much actual beings. Further confusion is added by the use of the term Kami-sama to denote the Christian/Jewish/Muslim God.
While to a Western audience it may seem silly or disturbing to be throwing around the word "god", to a Japanese audience quite familiar with the concept of Shinto it would be perfectly natural to have all these gods running around with people worshipping them and everything. |

No, my comment was saying that people don't really worship them. It seems the other way to me because I think the gods in this series do more things for other people than others may do for them. It isn't a bad thing but I wouldn't want to run a God around the town to look for someone, instead, give the God a nice rest while I do the searching.
I do understand why it's used lightly now though. Thanks for the Japanese cultural explaination. _________________

I see. But to my knowledge, another group is fansubbing this as well. I'll just follow them because MEYRIN was good and all but if I had issues playing episode 3, no telling what kind of issues I'll have with them in the end. _________________
