For the past few years, the government of Japan has tried to argue and persuade the UN to let it to be one of the UN Permanent Security Counsil.
I am personally, strongly against this. Reasons are simple, what does Japan represent? China represent is 1.3 billion people, USA represent its super power and economy, South Africa represent all the Africans, but what does Japan represent?
Also, another rather personal fact, is that Japan never really apologize or pay for the crim in which it commited to other nations during WW2. Not just this, the government of Japan has tried several times to change the history books in the school, tried to cover some of the bloodiest crime they commited during that time. Not just that, the Prime Minister of Japan has paid visit to the dead Japanese soldiers of WW2, despite the huge protest from the surrounding asian countries.
For those reasons, I do not want Japan to be a part of the UN Permanent Security Counsil!
At first I really didn't care but after looking at your point of view I agree. After all those horibble things there is no way they should be in the UN permanant security counsil.
south africa? wtf... i thought the five were US, Britain, France, China and Russia. With the events surrounding Japan right now, i doubt it will get in. And i don't want it to happen either.

That's the original 5. Despite Japan having the credentials to be accepted into the Security Council Permanent Membership (it's the 2nd largest financial benefactor for the UN), the original 5 will not want to diminish their power and prestige by letting a new member in. The most willing I see would be the United States and the UK since Blair has become Bush's b****. China would be against it until Japan formally apologizes for its war crimes, educates the public of their past crimes, stops honoring war criminals in shrines, and provides financial compensation for survivors of atrocities committed against them. Russia hasn't been getting along well with Japan as well with some islands under dispute between the two. France, I don't see them supporting the expansion of the Permanent Members, thus diluting their power and prestige.

Just the second largest economy in the world.

I thought they did several times, but I guess they need to do some more apologizing and maybe dole out some cash to the descendants of the victims before their apologies are fully accepted. My statement was not meant to be insulting by the way.

Anyway, what's you opinions?
My opinion is that I am for having Japan as a UN Permanent Security Council member with reservations. What they did to China and other neighboring countries was horrible, but the past is past and I think they probably have apologized enough. Japan is doing plenty of good things nowadays such as donating to the tsunami relief and are currently a very successful democratic nation.
I am Chinese by the way and I feel about equal disgust with what Mao Tse Tung did to his own people(slaughtered 10's of millions). And don't forget about the Tianamen Square Massacre. Please don't tell me you don't know about that incident. Anyway, I'm liking the Japan of today much more than the totalitarian government of China of today, also bootlegging capital of the world.
If anything, they haven't apologized enough (many prominent politicians have essentially denied Japan's wrongdoings in World War 2.) Japan's Prime Minister has never officially taken responsibility for those war crimes and when he did say sorry once, he visited a shrine honoring said war criminals, so I highly doubt the sincerity of that dubious "apology." The Japanese government censors the nation's textbooks and the atrocities committed by Japan are not even mentioned, a complete switch from Germany whose government has made every effort to teach its people about the horrors of the Holocaust. In fact, the majority of Japan's teenagers do not even know of Japan's war crimes.

After reading some of the posts in this thread and carefully considering the ramificatons of allowing Japan enter the U.N. Security Council, I have to say I an't think of a worse idea than letting the Land of the Rising Sun be a member. Despite their economic contribution to the World, I believe it might be better if a country from South America were included on the Security Council. Which one though... ? _________________ For I am Steven, King of Cretins! May all lesser Cretins bow before Me!!

Governments don't apologise, the government of Australia has never apologised for the lost generation, and John Howard being the prick he is never will, he probably doesnt even see anything wrong with it, he's a bastard.
Anyway back to Japan, no standing army, they haven't taken responsibility for their war crimes, large scale rapes and massacres, terrible treatment of POWs, but hey they USA has done a hell of alot of bad things as well, same with the chinese government, hmm so morals aren't an issue in choosing members.
The UN is really not worth talking about, the world is doomed, I dont think there's anyone that can save it the way things are going now.
