Im Australian, and I was wondering how many many people are aware of what the Japanese people are doing.
Whaling was banned, so what the Japanese companies have decided to do is claim they are capturing whales taking a small scientific sample sticking that into a freezer than sending the rest of the whale off to be carved up for food.
Whales are an endangered species, and recently (past month) it has come to my attention that the japanese wish to increase the number of whales used for this "research"
I know I havent properly explained this topic so please feel free to look up news sites for information on this topic.
This "research" is just an excuse to engage in whaling despite international agreements to set a quota on it. Gotta love these loopholes, but then again, Japan isn't going crazy with this (just going over said quota by a bit), so I don't really see a problem with it.

im from australia too but im sorry to say this, i wouldnt really care, even though whales are endangered species think about japan compared to australia in the meat market, australia is thriving with meat and animals farms in australia are abundant and we are bigger yet we only have around 20 million people whereas japan is smaller, and my friend told me that it is really expensive to buy meat there, plus they have alot more people so it will just seem impossible to stop. even though i see whaling as wrong, maybe people should open their minds and think about factors to consider before coming up with a conclusion. juss my opinion newayz

Well, can't be really helped. I do hate when they do that, killing the whale by using the excuse of "scientific research".
No kidding. At least it's not as bad as the Norwegians excuse, which is "cultural significance", for whaling. I like the way the Inuit's of Alaska do it. One whale, every year, no mechanicl harpoons, no fancy gear like sonar or motor boards, and the ENTIRITY of the whale is used for food. Not a portion, not half, the ENTIRE whale! For a YEAR! Even the bones get used for something. _________________ For I am Steven, King of Cretins! May all lesser Cretins bow before Me!!

If you are talking about "cultural significance", those Inuits still hunts whales and seals in Canada, and they called that their "traditions" too!

Traditions without a commercial bais, mind you. _________________ For I am Steven, King of Cretins! May all lesser Cretins bow before Me!!

Hmm, guess you are right. Hunting whale for money is just not right, and a great disaster to the already small amount of whales.
