Well, I made this thread because such a discussion is currently polluting the Gundam Seed Destiny thread... Sorry if such a thread has already been made...
I would compare both series so:
Full Metal Panic:
+ more realistic battles (except for lambda driver)
+ slightly more down-to-earth story
+/- humor filling the series
-/+ many ASs are downright ugly (a question of taste, really... ), but that is probably part of realisticness...
Gundam SEED:
+ more spectacular battles, with many colors everywhere
+ epic storyline (though sometimes... unimaginative... )
-/+ battles are sometimes unbelievable: as soon as a 'named MS' goes out, the 'unnamed ones' barely defend themlselves and immediately go to dust... but that is a characteristic of Gundam probably...
-/+ too much importance given to MSs
- some technologies affect the consistency of the series (be it only Akatsuki's reflective shield; why is it the only MS to have such a thing?)
- many 'philosophical' sentences about war, peace, love and friendship feel too childish for people over 18... (and I am over 18...) (but some are fine though); war is treated in too much a childish way...
- some MSs seem to be introduced only to sell Bandai's action figures (Saviour, Andy's Murasame, Heine's GOUF)
Well... I am more aware of SEED's problems than FMP's, because I have watched all of GS/GSD and only short pieces of FMP; and SEED's problems are much more apparent in Destiny...
So if you want to point out other points, or to discuss my points, or to post that which you posted in the GSD thread, feel free to do so!
EDIT: And I think that the following series shall be taken into account for the poll:
-FMP, FMP: Fumoffu, FMP: TSR
-GS, GSD _________________ Neothoron

oh wow...now we are moving the discussion to a whole new thread...
btw, I think the realism point doesn't really score. Sure, FMP is more realistic than Gundam Seed, but only by a bit. I don't really think AS that can cloak itself so that it can't be seen visibly or the Lambda drive is realistic at all. In fact, if we remove all the sci-fi bits from both Gundam and FMP!, they will be more or less the same (maybe FMP! will be better, because of the humour)
I don't really find the "philosophical" sentences in Gundam Seed childish either (and I am also over 1. In fact, I find Rau's ideals at the end of Gundam Seed quite crazy and non-childish, afterall, Rau had a point... ever since humans came to exist on this planet we had been fighting wars.
But you are right in that one of the good points in the FMP! series is humour. I find that Gundam Seed series lack humour, and if it had some funny moments, it'll be even better.

Yay my 100th post!!!
Anyway I chose Gundam mostly just because I haven't watched the new FMP yet and because I simply find it more entertaning then FMP I don't remember all that well but there were some episodes in the first FMP that I didn't like all to much but ofcourse not all eps in GS is that great either so and it was kind of slow in the begining GS I mean. Then again maybe Im just a GS fanboy that can't see past anything. Either way I can however say that if we were talking about Fumoffu then without a doubt I'd say Fumoffu, one of my favorite animes so far. But then again I guessing we're not taking Fumoffu into consideration in this poll
Edit: Just saw on anidb.net that Fumoffu is ranked 5 and GS is ranked 7 on the top ten (voted) and both the first season of FMP and Fumoffu is on the top then most users while GS is not on that list. Im fully aware that not everyone registers there and mark which animes they've seen and so on but still just letting you know. FMP 2294 Fumoffu 2133 users.
Well... I did not think about Fumoffu, but my idea was to discuss around all series (excluding any Gundam SD though), so I would take FMP:Fumoffu into consideration...
I will edit the first post accordingly. _________________ Neothoron

Gundam Seed!!!, FMP is okay but the characters aren't as interesting to me compared to those in GS. I like the humor in FMP but I love the philosophical ideas that are brought in by GS. They seem more complex characters than in FMP. Mech wise I like GS better they always come up with something original which is also a plus to me.
I chose FMP for storyline and stuff. FMP can seriously pull anyone into the anime and a lot of people love it for that, but Gundam SEED..... Not too interesting in my opinion. It's not bad but compared to FMP, not even competition! _________________

Well FMP is quite realistic and is moderately related to the modern warfare to a certain degree(plus it is set in a world we all know, terrorist and UN such things). The thing that i am quite disappointed with is that the AS design isn't quite spectucular. The characters are really something, real elites.
All those philosophical quote just mean one thing, that is, don't start a war...
GS is brilliant in its storyline and most main characters came from prestigious family The elites here are like born with it. All the technology and machine is surreal but, when it come right down to it, it can be done(in the quite distant future that it)
The humour is just FMP styles i think
Both are tackling the genre of warfare and political story. Oh well.......
Haha i actually using the skills for my history test for this
So it is the battle of popularity between the futute world and the modern one.
Can't decide.
FMP /ftw. Great story, humor, animation, character profile/unique...etc. The only thing I like about Gundamn S/D is the mecha and that only. the story is old, character profiles resemble those from earlier series most noticably Gundamn Z.
FMP is an excellent and enchantingly remarkable anime , however on the overall comparism, plot, and all i prefered gundam seed.
GS> splendid theme song(e.g 'we were so close together' by see -saw)
( Touching and dramatic)
>cool fighting scenes as well as great graphic designs:characters' layout and costume & MS alike!
fmp is more realistic in terms of warfare, enviroment but in terms of characters i think they lacks emotion. all they do was simply breaking down oppsition, comedy and perheps some romantic sence.
gs/gsd character show more emotions n personaility. In terms of plots they have let the story develop and also they have improve alot comparing to those previous Gundam which only have a good n evil side.
Well yes FMP is more realistic in warfare, I mean come on, we don't have moble suits that can fire rockets and carry laser swords that can travel through space blah blah, but it would be nice if mankind would achieve that point in life, but not anytime soon
But yea FMP is hilarious
