Well, I just watched this 12 part OAV series.
I must say I'm very impressed by the story, its much better than the Alternate Universe Gundam series out there that I've seen (Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED).
It deals with much more realistic people, a small squad of mobile suits, 08th MS team and all the interaction between the members of the platoon. The story is very gritty, with hardships and heavy fighting suffered by both sides of the war. Its not an huge epic but mainly deals with just small scrimishes between both sides.
The only thing I would of maybe changed in this series is make it 11 episodes because I felt the 12th episode didn't really have a point.
In all, the best Gundam series I've seen so far and now I really want to watch all the Universal Gundam series =P _________________

The series IS 11 episodes long. The 12th episode is actually an "epilogue" and a separate release in Japan that dealt with a different theme (Newtypes--which is something you have to watch the UC's and Gundam X to understand).

Well, IMO 08th MS Team was a good sidestory but not nearly the best. Good plot and some nice battles that were more down to Earth. But I think the characters are a bit too cliched and a bit thin, though they did have some good development. And when compared to the TV shows it really lacked the epic atmosphere and it doesn't show the tragedy of war nearly as well. There's also the fact that it made a bit too much retcon changes to the timeline that parts of MSG don't seem to make sense anymore (And this show is fairly unique in its approach, so if you expect the other UCs to be similar you'll be disappointed. UC TV shows have even more superpowers and mystical phenomenons than even Wing and SEED. Though the OVAs 0080 and 0083 do stay fairly realistic too) |

Epic is okay, but I don't like super powers. Super trained boy killers like Gundam Wing or special supernatural abilities like Gundam SEED. I don't see a point of a series when the skills of a pilot are so far apart that they are unstoppable or godly.
I guess thats why 08th MS team appealed to me. Down to earth story about a platoon of normal soldiers fighting a bad war. There are no ungodly characters in it, maybe a superweapon but even that was not invulnable unlike what seemed like super phaseshift armor in Gundam SEED and others.
It made the story all that more realistic, down to earth gritty fighting. Each character was well rounded and had their own quirks, even the Lieutenant had flaws and fears. I found Norris' character a fresh breather from the crappy Gundam SEED characters (I thought Fray was the more realistic character outta all of them). He as an military man to the core, up to the part that he says "I win." That just blew me away, heh.
I might be interested in watching more of UC Gundam although I am not looking forward to more unrealistic fighting like Gundam Wing or SEED.
The everyday fighting and survival by normal soldiers in a small unit in a huge war made a cool story. _________________

Well, I guess I'm just used to much deeper and more unique characters that are in the other Gundam shows (especially the Tomino ones), because 08th MS Team's characters really didn't do much for me. And I never cared much for Norris either.
But yeah, I think the whole "realism" (as "realism" in giant robo anime like this goes anyway) of 08th MS Team is one of its bigger appeals since it attracts people who don't like certain aspects of Gundam. But anyway, the other UC Gundam generally go beyond the superpowers in Wing and SEED. If you watch 08MS: Last Resort and don't like it, I don't think you'd enjoy the Newtype themes in the other Gundam shows since they are very dominant in the story, even more so than those "SEED modes" in SEED and so on.
But like I said, you might want to check out the other two UC OVAs. 0080 is set in a colony and is a fairly touching story about a brat who learns about the tragedy of war through firsthanded experience, and 0083 features one of the most popular Gundam characters ever (Anavel Gato) and some excellent space fights. 0083 also had character designs by Toshihiro Kawamoto who later worked on 08th MS, Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain. |

I rewatched some of 8th MS team (just cuz I am experienced in Gundam World and I think this is the best Gundam I've seen so far).
I didn't realize he lost a leg at the end. Its so subtle that you can totally miss it. One of the reasons I love this series, where would you see the main character losing a limb?
Of course I'm not really sure how they survived the explosion in an open cockpit anyways.

Well, you see the main character losing much more in Zeta Gundam... And Athrun was supposed to lose an arm in SEED (with Kira dying)... But that didn't happen. |

That would of rocked with SEED. I guess they did a crappy cop out ending where everyone but the badguys are happy. _________________

Don't you think that the 08th MS team is the best Gundam series?
You don't get to see soe Engine overheat and stuff on other Gundam series....no?
Plus i think it focuses more into close-combat fights...like when Shiro battled that Zaku with (I don't know the name of the MS he was piloting) was great |

| 08th MS Team is still one of my favorite OVAs of all the OVAs i've seen. before Kaiser mentioned it, i would have never guessed that about what happened to Shiro (albeit, i did have the misfortune of only watching and taping the dubbed and edited version). that aside, i prefered its "in the trenches" Vietnam conflict styling compared to the tiresome MS Gundam, MS Gundam Wing, and MS Gundam SEED approaches of a single type of mobile suit wreaking havoc to anything that comes its way, unless it's either another gundam or something related to gundam technology (i.e. Tallgeese, Newtypes, etc.). despite the drama of SEED, in the end, i was merely wondering just who was going to make it alive to the ending credits. the overkill was rediculous to the point of being almost amusing, i was nearly keeping a tally of how many key characters got offed. 08th MS Team on the other hand was not only more realistic in the potrayal of war by having a cast of ordinary, if not adept, soldiers, it also had a nice love story to it that added a little variety in what would otherwise be the Platoon of anime. my absolute favorite MS duel in any gundam series is without a doubt the match between Shiro's EZ8 and Norris's Gouf Custom. no superpowers, just tactics and determination, two elements that turn the tide of any battle. |

The reason that this series is my fav above any Gundam series is that there are no Newtypes or Seeds. The battles are fierce, great OP and ED music and some funny platoon members on it.
and the way Shiro Overworked the Gundam to prevent the Mobile Armor that Aina is piloting.
not many Gundam fans knew about this series since there's a lot of Gundam Sequels that came out after Mobile Suit Gundam. _________________

| IMO, 08th ms team was really good, but not to the point that it is better than the other older series such as zeta. But I must say, the ending was pretty sad. |
