I'm going to buy a new system this weekend and will be getting an AMD Sempron 3000 using Mainboard Socket 754.

I want to ask whether anyone have tried to install Linux on Sempron-based boards. I knew the AMD64 and Opteron is compatible with Linux, but no idea on the Sempron-based. Anyone have tried this before, or maybe some links for it?

I am still a complete newb to Linux and wanted to try to code using java, C++ on Linux. I heard that it is more powerful on Linux, so wanted to give it a try.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you, unreal_sorcerer. Been great help for that.... I seen some of them and I think Sempron is the repackaged version of Duron and XP boards.

Thanks. I think I will proceed on to buying Sempron based system this weekend. I'm planning to install Windows and Linux on the HDD and wanted to learn more about Linux. If possible, I would like to try LFS within 6 months after understanding the basics of Linux.

The mainboard with Sokcet 939 ones can't use Sempron as their motherboard. I'm still thinking whether wanted to get Socket 754 or Socket A. I will probably get the Socket A since it is dual channelled. Still thinking though, just can't decide for now.... I still got 2 more days in the end Very Happy

By the way,

Since i haven't coded C/C++ on Linux, i am not sure if there are many "enterprise level" tools around just like on Windows(Visual Studio.NET, Borland's Products...), but coding in Java won't be much of a problem though due to the universal open-source IDE called Eclipse as you might have heard of.

Anyways, have fun...(migrating back and forth from Windows <-> Linux really tires me out so i am sticking to Windows these days)

those processors has been working with linux for quite a while now, so i say it should definitely work.

lol, i'm pretty late but the reason sempron isn't dual-channeled is because it has its own memory controller in the processor and there isn't a huge latency difference compared to a dual-channel mode.

semprons are suppose to make the xp and duron obsolete. actually, AMD has celebrated their last production of xp processors a few months ago. so i hope the system you bought is really cheap and really worth the money.
