Eastern endings VS Western endings

We've all been there, you are nearing the end of a series when all of a sudden the main character's entire family dies, he has to kill his own true love to save the world and he has no milk for his breakfast. You start to wonder how it will all end happy and WHAM! Someone shit the bed and no one is walking into the sunset. All the hero has to keep him alive is the ghost of his true love telling him she really loved him. That's an Eastern ending. Spiritually uplifting, major emotional downer. I don't think I need to explain a Western ending, but I'd love to hear what you all think is better? Maybe name some anime that have had the best or worse of either ending. Or we could start some sort of East VS West rivaly that snowballs until we start taking each other out Tupac/Biggie Smalls style...or not.

I like Eastern endings. Especially if it's played
out well(not sappy) After watching something with
an "Eastern" ending, I feel depressed for a few days,
until my vain attempts to lift my spirits finally comes
through. But I like having my emotions toyed with while
watching a movie or TV show

I'm a sucker for happy (western) endings. After all, seeing happy endings kinda gives me hope for how my life may turn out. Unlike whiteleaf, I hate being toyed with, especially cuz I get depressed rather easily.

Can't choose... The 1st choice is too sad and hopeless, but the 2nd one is also too cheesy... Ummm... Can the destiny be in somewhere between??? Not too good but not too bad...???
