I've seen both "Ranma 1/2" and "Maison Ikkoku" on video competely. They're both really great anime series. Now, as for manga, I'm on the last volume of "Maison Ikkoku" thats going to be released this february. "Maison Ikkokku" is more for mature audience than "Ranma 1/2". I haven't read "Ranma 1/2" cuz it's way way way too long. If "Maison Ikokku" is only 15 volumes, "Ranma 1/2" is over 30 if not more. "Ranma 1/2" is more of a comedy and has a bit less of a romance than what "Maison Ikkoku" has to offer.
For me, I'd go for "Maison Ikkoku", simply cuz I like the romance thats involved in there. I'm at my age of 20, still doesn't have a gf T_T, and would love to experience pure love thats portrayed in "Maison Ikokku".
Ranma 1/2 is great in my opinion... of course, it is cause of Ranma 1/2 that I got into fanfiction writing >.> Curse my overactive inspirational imagination!!!!
Maison Ikkoku is a good read for those times when you don't need a good laugh ^^ And trust me... there are times when a good laugh is the worst thing you can have (funerals, weddings, solemn moments, girl's dressing room... ) But no matter what, all of Takahashi-sama's mangas are good ^^ *brainwashed*
