actually, I totally forgotten this... but Gundam was supposed to be a parody to World War II or something, but I've forgotten where I have read that...
That's rather like a space war, a star war or something like that.
But it has some elemnts of WWs. Many anime do. _________________ *Kindly resize your sig to the permitted size*

Hey, I was saying PARODY!!!! You can't make an anime that's DIRECTLY about WWII anyway, you got to use a different approach. So that's why there are parodies.

You have to remember that the japanese culture is very different from our own. Where our golden age cartoons were all politically influenced, I don't believe they came out with any cartoons which were like that. Their beliefs were based on honor and families. That's how they were so tenacious when they fought in WW2. They would rather die than accept defeat, hence the seppuku any commanding japanese officer committed when americans overran their bases. I also believe their respecting their dead by not making too many movies about war. That's how I interpret it at least.

<deep breath>
I'm sure the Japanese arn't proud of the war. I certianly wouldn't be poking at the subject... Anyway, since WW2 end, Japan has been super cool - all those environmental plans and peace promotions and stuff... Perhaps it the other side who didn't learn from war?
But in terms of anime, there are heaps of anime that deal with conflict on an international level. I've never come across any pro-war animes, but certianly, every second anime there is the underlying message of peace and stuff. It would be too touchy to make an anime obviously about WW2, but I agree with LOL-ness in that there are heaps of paradies. Anime's different to real life, no matter how realistic it seems. There's a technique they use in dramatic theatre where they're acting out one thing, but the audience is meant to go away from the theatre applying the ideas to real life.
Lucas once said in an interview that Star Wars was influenced by the Vietnam war. People flying around in space and Jedis doing cool moves obviously is a bit far fetched, but just like war influences american movies, it influences Japanese anime. I may be stretching out on a limb here, but anime like Naruto and FMP (just using recent examples) have underlying messages of peace. Anyone hurting or oppressing others in these animes are punished. So there are no anime directly portraying the events of WW2, but anime has certianly been effected by the war.
